Hello Everyone:

My name is Vira Jones. I am the Executive Director/Founder of the Bedford Stuyvesant Museum of African Art (BSMAA), an emerging arts organization created as an educational tool for an underserved community in Brooklyn, New York.

BSMAA is presenting its third annual Nelson “Madiba” Mandela Humanitarian Award September 2016.

While we are narrowing down our nominees for 2016, we are pleased to share informations on our 2015 honorees, who were presented with their awards on September 26, 2015.

The 2015 award recipients were selected because each individual exemplified and epitomized many of the principles that the late South African President embodied in his life: his idea of a just society, his fortitude, his exceptional dignity and his unwavering sacrifices toward helping humanity. The following individuals who have confirmed to attend are:

Isaiah Washington
, an internationally acclaimed, award-winning actor, author and philanthropist, through DNA test, traced his African ancestry back to the Mende people in Sierra Leone.  Since then, Mr. Washington has dedicated his energy to give back to the country of his ancestors. He is also the author of Man From Another Land: How Finding My Roots Changed My Life, that chronicles his experiences. Watch Youtube link on Washington. www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpNa7r896Jw

Bryan Stevenson,
is a Harvard-educated attorney who is has been considered by former Archbishop Desmond Tutu as the “American Nelson Mandela”. Stevenson, Executive Director/Founder of the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI), has dedicated his life to winning relief for those wrongly convicted and sentenced to death row. Stevenson is the author of the New York Times best-selling book Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption. http://abcnews.go.com/Nightline/video/30-year-death-row-inmate-celebrates-days-freedom-30548291

Principal Nadia Lopez
is the founder of Mott Hall Bridges Academy in Brownsville, one of the toughest neighborhoods in Brooklyn, New York.  She captured the attention of the world press after being spotlighted on Humans of New York, a photoblog that chronicles the lives of New Yorkers. Since then, she has helped raise more than $1.4 million for her students to take field trips to Harvard University. View link: www.ed.gov/blog/2015/02/principal-nadia-lopez-humans-of-new-york/

What is the money being used for:

All generous funds raised will be used for pay for the venue and the crystal award with the image of Mandela engraved that each recipient will receive. BSMAA also needs funds for the reception that will follow the awards ceremony, 1,500 copies of a glossy program book, fees for the photographer and setup for the audio equipment.  Any supporter, who donates at least $100 and more will receive a copy of the program book.

Please help BSMAA to have the most dynamic program ever.

Fondly,
BSMAA
