Save the Meramec Route 66 Bridge
Donation protected
The Meramec River Route 66 Bridge is located in Missouri's Route 66 Park (St. Louis County). The bridge was constructed in 1931-32 to serve the needs of America’s new federal highway established in 1926, U.S. (Route) 66. Today Route 66 is an international attraction that draws thousands of tourists each year. This is good news for Missouri and why we need to preserve historic resources along Route 66. The Meramec River Bridge on Route 66 is unique – a three-span rigid-connected Warren deck truss. When you look at this bridge, you see the truss system below the bridge, not on top of it. If you flipped it upside down, it would look more like the Chain of Rocks Bridge in St. Louis, which carries Route 66 across the Mississippi River (between Missouri and Illinois). We have only one Warren truss Route 66 bridge in Missouri. Isn’t that worth saving? We believe it is.
Our goal is to raise $650,000 prior to the end of 2016. The money being raised will go toward securing an owner for the Route 66 Meramec River Bridge. Missouri State Parks has agreed to take over ownership of the bridge if we can secure an endowment. If we do not raise $575,000 by the end of 2016, the bridge will be demolished in 2017.
All money donated will be made available for the purpose of preserving the Meramec River Route 66 Bridge for public benefit. Understandably, there is a chance that we will not be able to raise sufficient funds to save the bridge. In that event, all funds will be made available to Route 66 State Park, which will preserve a section of the bridge and/or design an interpretive exhibit featuring the history of the bridge and Route 66 in Missouri.
This campaign is a joint non-profit effort of many organizations, including Route 66 Association of Missouri, Great Rivers Greenway, Trailnet, Landmarks Association of St. Louis, St. Louis County Parks & Recreation, Open Space Council and Missouri Alliance for Historic Preservation.
All contributions are tax-deductible.
We accept pledges for large donations! Call Landmarks Association of St. Louis, Inc. at [phone redacted] to make your pledge today.
