Coffee - Nepalese Help Themselves

Donation protected
Jaimasih,

The common greeting amongst Christians in Nepal, a country and people I have learned to love dearly over the last 5 years of doing ministry and humanitarian aide in the Himalaya Mountains.  For most of the last 45 years, I have been in Asia, still living in Taiwan, extensively ministering in the Philippines and as just mentioned, spending a large majority of time over the last 5 years in Nepal.

On April 25, 2015, just as I was ready to leave Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital, to go back to Taiwan, a major devastating earthquake hit the entire country, causing indescribable destruction and loss of life.  Though emergency teams and much donation have been provided, still today, most villages throughout the land have received little or no help. Regrettably, the preponderance of aide never reached the more rural areas where we labor.  Villages without water for over 1½ year are not uncommon. Too, other tragic events have many times kept Nepal and her beautiful people in need of help.

However, I have often been asked by my Nepalese co-workers, “Why is it the world typically looks at us with the desire to help and donate, but misses the fact that we don’t want to be dependent on outside help. "HELP US HELP OURSELVES.”  I find the Nepalese to be a talented, industrious and beautiful people.  There is a need and opportunity before us!  Together, we CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

COFFEE - Is a perfect solution to help the farmers striving not only to help themselves, but to greatly increase the ability of the country to develop and meet the needs for building infrastructure, helping provide needs of the school children, establish rural hospitals and much more.

The Himalaya Mountains have a perfect environment for the cultivation of high-grade, organic, specialty coffees.  Coffee is not new to Nepal, but it currently produces only 15% of her potential. Too, unlike corn, rosemary and other less valuable crops being grown now, Coffee is a highly valuable product and has the largest market in the world.

For the last 2 years, we have been researching and assessing the potential of the coffee industry in Nepal.  We have met with many famers and even with the new Minister of Agriculture.  Bottom line, we are increasingly aware of the various details from the local farmer’s needs to the Nepal government requirements and international markets.  This places us in an excellent position to help these folks develop and market this highly prized and valuable resource.

What is exciting and gives us an opportunity is the fact that we are presently continuing in the procedures to brand our coffee as a registered Nepalese coffee. Then once all the initial preparations are complete, there is a major Coffee Federation prepared to help in a substantial way.  Already we have many farmers who want to cooperate with us as we will be obtaining land in a central location, establishing a full-scale processing plant, packaging, quality control and export to a US market (and others) which is already ready to buy all the coffee at spot pricing. As well, we will be providing training on how to cultivate the best coffee and training for maintenance and operation of the processing/packaging equipment, and all other export details - -  not forgetting the brand recognition to be developed in the local coffee shops starting to expand across Kathmandu and other areas.  We already have management in place.

Development of the Coffee Industry is one of the best answers to helping the wonderful Nepalese “help themselves.”

Your donations, large or small,  will make it possible to finalize all initial preparations.

If you would like any further detail, please contact me directly.  Too, there will be regular updates on the progress of this project.

I and the Nepalese people, with grateful hearts, thank you for any assistance you can provide through your donations.
