Help Commemorate Our Veterans

"The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceive the Veterans of earlier wars were treated and appreciated by their nation." – George Washington
In a collaborative effort, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 653 and the Exchange Club of New Canaan are compiling a list of New Canaan residents who have served in every conflict since World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Operation Desert Storm, and the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. Four bronze plaques are being made with their names to recognize the sacrifices of these brave men and women who have valiantly served to make America the greatest nation on Earth.
During the period of World War II alone, 1,093 men and women from New Canaan served in the armed forces, representing nearly 17% of the town’s population, the greatest percentage of residents among all towns in the State of Connecticut. Regrettably, 38 of these servicemen lost their lives.
The new plaques will be prominently hung on permanent display in the entrance hall of the recently renovated Town Hall and where they will be joined with two existing plaques that contain the names of 615 men from New Canaan who served during the American Revolution, Mexican War, Civil War and World War I. These two older bronze plaques were dedicated in 1924 as a gift from the citizens of New Canaan and placed in Town Hall.
The cost of the project, which includes the renovation of the existing plaques and the casting of four new plaques (plus mounting and transportation), is $35,000. The Veterans of Foreign Wars will bear $20,000 of this cost.
Like our forefathers before us, we would like to make this a community effort, and therefore we are asking the citizens of the Town to help us raise $15,000. We are writing to you to request your financial support in this important project to permanently recognize New Canaanites who served our country. Your gift will ensure that we obtain a good representation from New Canaan residents.
You may make a contribution by sending a check to the Exchange Club of New Canaan Foundation, P.O. Box 1163, New Canaan, CT 06840 or online at this site. All gifts are tax deductible as a 501(c)(3) organization.
Please plan to join us at an unveiling ceremony to be held at Town Hall on Veteran’s Day, November 11th, 2016.
