Small dollar support matters for opportunity youth!
Too often, an unexpected expense will make the difference between connection and disconnection:
A car repair or transit pass to get to work or school
A uniform or work-appropriate outfits
A tool or piece of equipment required for a job
Child care when grandma gets sick
When something like this hits a young adult with no savings, even if the cost is only a few hundred dollars, it can keep them from taking advantage of an opportunity or cause them to leave school or work.
Lots of the things we need to do to support opportunity youth are hard or expensive, but these emergency needs can (and should) be met!

Starting in September, with your help, OpportunitySD member organizations will be ready with needed cash when our young adults need a helping hand.

We are very grateful to the San Diego Foundation, Grant Associates and board members Phil Blair (Manpower), Rick Vaccari (Sempra), Andy Berg (NECA/IBEW) and Sammy Totah (Kaiser Permanente), who have collectively donated $8,000 to launch the fund! Thanks to their generosity, we are almost half way to our goal of $20,000.

MORE BACKGROUND:
Opportunity youth are young adults full of promise and potential. They are navigating the tricky waters between childhood and adulthood, between school and career, between family of origin and independent living.
37,000 young adults in San Diego County are neither working nor in school - our opportunity youth. The reasons for their struggles range from under-education to teen parenthood to challenges with mental health or drug addiction. But their fundamental issue is lack of resources. They lack the knowledge to find the right next step and navigate from high school to college, training or work. They lack the network to introduce them to people and opportunities. They lack the financial resources to reliably pay for housing, transportation, tuition, food, child care—the costs of being an adult.
As a response, the San Diego Workforce Partnership, a 501(c)3 workforce development board for the county—is establishing the OpportunitySD Hope Fund to help bridge the resource gaps for young adults and prevent them from becoming opportunity youth in the first place.
This fund is part of the OpportunitySD movement, which engages more than 1,300 youth, social service providers, educators, policy makers and employers with the mission of reducing the number of opportunity youth by 11,000 by 2020.
This new fund will award grants of up to $500 to young adults who are working with OpportunitySD member community, education and workforce development organizations—just-in-time funds to bust through barriers to school and work.
