HELP US BUILD A PLAYGROUND
Donation protected
These children were in class all morning long, patiently waiting for the break-time bell to ring. At last it did and they all ran outside to play…on an old, cracked patch of asphalt devoid of any features. Where’s the playground equipment? To put it bluntly, there isn’t any. However, with your generous help, there eventually could be…
The Royal Mile Primary School, originally known as Milton House School, is situated on the Canongate in the heart of Edinburgh, the only operational primary school left within the historic Old Town. Built by the Edinburgh School Board in 1886, the red sandstone structure is a Category B listed building and a fine example of the Scots tradition. Indeed, the Victorians left us with many wonderful contributions and inventions but they apparently never got around to things like monkey bars!
As was the case with many similar schools from that era, the empty playground theme continued throughout the entire 20th century and now, 130 years after the school first opened its doors, we’d like your help to finally change all of that. We want to build a modern playground complete with various climbing structures, space to run around in and quiet corners. This would not only enrich the lives of the current student body but would enhance the lives of many future generations of children as well.
The rationale for improving the playground is to assist in key areas of child development including skills like problem solving, risk assessment, socialising and generally contributing to good health and well being. Multiple studies have shown that these objectives can be achieved through interaction with the type of playground environment we are hoping to create.
It is anticipated that the work will be done in phases, as and when the donations allow. Obviously, the more money that can be raised, the more that we can build.
Please donate if you are able to and please also pass the link to our page to anyone you think might be able to help. Thank you very much!

Here is an example of the kind of playground that we aspire to build (thanks to Sciennes Primary school for all of their assistance):
