Refuge

Refugees are scared.

Lansing has a long history of welcoming thousands from around the world to rebuild their lives here. But with the recent restrictions imposed on resettlement, refugees are scared that welcome mat could disappear.

‘Refuge’ is a portrait and storytelling project about 12 families from around the world who fled war and persecution at home. Each family tells a story of surviving conflict, resettling in Michigan, and thriving in their newfound home. These families have bought homes, started businesses, sent their children to local schools and universities and add to the diverse quilt that makes Lansing a unique and welcoming community.

They are our neighbors.

This project celebrates refugee resettlement stories with a traveling exhibit, book and website. It will encourage our community to support continuing resettlement efforts through volunteering, donations and advocacy. The exhibit will open at the State Capitol as part of Refugee Awareness Week in June, then travel to schools, churches, community centers and businesses across the region

Dozens of volunteer photographers, writers and designers have already donated nearly $30,000 worth of their time, creativity and expertise.

Now we need to raise enough in donations to cover printing costs. If we raise just $7500 we can create the exhibit and print a beautiful, compelling book that will accompany it. All proceeds from the book will be donated to local agencies.

Will you help us combat this climate of fear and instead celebrate the refugees among us?
