Help Protect the First Amendment and Freedom of the Press
Santa Clara News Online was started to provide excellent coverage of major political and policy issues in Santa Clara, report Santa Clara news accurately, timely and independently and provide unbiased news that matters to people in the community.
That mission is now threatened by a meritless lawsuit designed to silence it.
Recently, Santa Clara News Publisher and Founder Robert Haugh was served with a lawsuit in Santa Clara County Superior Court by Santa Clara Eagle Publishing Company (aka Santa Clara Weekly) and its Publisher Miles Barber alleging items such as defamation, misappropriation of trade names and interference with business practices based on the Santa Clara News’ reporting on them.
I believe the claims are without merit and designed only to silence me. I have spoken to many lawyers who believe I have a very strong defense, but agree that this case will require substantial legal fees and time.
Estimates range from $20,000 to $50,000, with most requiring a $10,000 deposit/retainer.
I cannot disclose information, nor provide further comment on case proceedings due to legal reasons.
I hate asking for assistance, but I believe in what I have started, and plan to continue serving the community with quality and timely news coverage. In order to continue, vast financial support will be necessary as I challenge the allegations. It is frustrating that I even must ask for support to fight such claims, but I will not back down and I stand by freedom of the press. This is a true David vs. Goliath situation and I would be tremendously grateful for your support.
