Save the Tropics Sign!
Donation protected
Opened in 1950, The Tropics was located in Lincoln, Illinois, a post-WWII alignment of Rt. 66. Its original owner, Mr. Vince Schwenoha, served in Hawaii during a tour of duty, so he named the restaurant The Tropics and included a signature neon palm tree in the sign erected to advertise the establishment. The Tropics was one of the best known and loved restaurants along Rt. 66 in Illinois. The Tropics closed in 1997 and the restaurant building was sold, but the original neon sign was salvaged.
The Save the Tropics Sign committee needs to raise $45,000 to restore, transport, and install the Tropics Sign. We would like to raise an additional $5,000 to purchase a standing sign that would provide information about the sign and restaurant.
A donation, no matter the amount, would be appreciated greatly! Restoring the sign would bring back many wonderful memories of a restaurant that impacted so many people. Please help us save this iconic sign!
