TRAVELERS GIVING BACK TO BALI

No matter what kind of traveler we are, we are all very privileged to even be able to set foot on a plane. The more we travel and see how simply the majority of people live, the more we want to give back to the world we love so much to explore.

The Solo Female Traveler Network's Giving Back Program is to remind ourselves to stay grateful and for us to share some of the privilege with which we were born.

Why give to education in Bali?

For many of us, education is a right, even a requirement, and is provided for free. As kids we didn't worry about having enough paper and pencils, books to read, or if our teacher would show up to class. We were taught to read and how to use a computer as basics of our education.

This is not the reality in Bali, where many families can not afford to educate their children. Sometimes when families pay the school fees, it means their children go without learning materials, shoes, bags, lunch, and even enough clothes.

Once a family sends their child to school, the challenges are not over. Often times teachers are so underpaid that they don't show up to class. They find better money as drivers and tour guides for tourists. They also have families to feed, so they do what they need to do, but it still leaves students without a teacher.

Why The Lily Lane Learning Foundation?

Lily Lane Villas began with hard work, ambition, and over time, became the livelihood of its local owner husband and wife team, who were mentored by an Australian former school teacher and her son. Over the years, as their small business became more successful, they were finally in a position to be able to give back to the community that they all love so much. Currently, they sponsor the village's community sporting facility including a volleyball court where both men and women, children and adults, come to play almost on a daily basis.

Motivated by their concern for education and care for their fellow community members, they began to build the Learning Center. After donating the land and gathering the initial $30,000usd in donations to begin building, they now need our help to keep the project going.

The first goal of the Foundation is a project to establish a community education center, known as the Learning Center, for the needy of the local village. The education center is not intended to be a school but designed to supplement the under-resourced local education system.  Initially, the Learning Center would be staffed by volunteers and open for children, after school on several afternoons a week and on weekends. Young people would have access to learning resources such as laptops, books (especially dictionaries), maps, posters, and stationery.

On September 9, 2015, ironically on International Literacy Day, they met with the King of Ubud, Dr. Tjokorda Gde Raka Sukawati and was thrilled to receive his unqualified support. The King particularly welcomes education and environmental initiatives which benefit the poor. Receiving support for the Lily Lane Learning Foundation at the highest level in Ubud, and in the local community, along with a commitment to maintain ongoing communication with local government officials, is critical to the long-term sustainability of this grassroots venture.

Why this project?

Our founder has spent extensive time searching for a project that reflects the same values of The Solo Female Traveler Network and has found it in The Lily Lane Learning Foundation. After spending many weeks along-side this project,  we have complete confidence in their organization, financial skills, and passion to keep the project going and to use resources wisely. They have demonstrated a high-level of integrity, transparency, and collaboration not only with us but more importantly with the village community to which they belong.

What has been done so far...

With the land Lily Lane Villas gave along with donations they gathered, they have begun a two-story building as the future site of The Learning Center.

As you can see, they started from scratch, as a major labor of love.

First steps...

Today they have the roofing and beginning of a two-floor building!

How you can help...
Any contribution, large or small, helps. $5 could buy a dictionary, $100 would cover lighting, and $1,000 helps finish the roof! Every donation goes directly to the project for furnishing, school supplies, books, laptops, and infrastructure.
