UC Irvine: American Solar Challenge

UCI’s first solar car team needs your help to participate in the American Solar Challenge!

History of the Team:
The SolEaters are comprised of 30 undergraduate students from disciplines ranging from mechanical and electrical engineering to finance and business. With a technical background and a passion for renewable energy, we formed the SolEaters - UC Irvine Solar Car Team, to create a foundation for UC Irvine students to apply skills developed in the classroom to become innovators in renewable energy and engineering design.

It began as a faint idea to start a solar car team at UCI. We held initial meetings early in the 2016-17 school year with just a couple students attending. After several meetings with professors and a lot of time spent gaining interest from the engineering student body, the solar car team went official in the Spring quarter of 2017! Our team will continue to push the boundaries of what UC Irvine students are capable of accomplishing. Our ultimate goal is to build the foundation for future UCI students to participate in solar car competitions and achieve more than what is taught in the classroom. It will take considerable time, effort, and resources, but the team is excited to work together and develop our own solar vehicle.

Competition Background:
The Innovators Educational Foundation is an organization devoted to creating educational opportunities where students are challenged with “hands-on” learning experiences in the area of science, engineering, and technology. In 1990, the Innovators Educational Foundation hosted their first solar race that went from Orlando, FL to Warren, MI. Every two years, universities from all over the world gather in North America to participate in the American Solar Challenge(ASC). The ASC is an endurance race across North America that spans 1,500-2,000 miles. The competition challenges students from higher education to develop an original design solution that addresses areas of energy management, transportation, and high tech materials. Building a solar car addresses all aspects of an engineering project and teaches students the valuable life skills needed to succeed. Aside from designing and building a car powered only by the sun, our team of students must also excercise skills in project management, communication, and teamwork.

What We Need:

Our car will be constructed from lightweight metals and composites, use tires and rims specifically designed for solar racing, and implement highly efficient and advanced technologies for the solar cells and batteries. All of these things add up quickly, and many universities that participate in this race spend as much as $400,000 on the car alone. Our team worked hard over the summer to finish up all of our budgeting and designs, and it is now time for us to order all of our materials and begin building our car. While our budget is less than the $400,000 dollars that some of the other teams spend, we still need a lot of support from you to purchase everything we need to make it to 2018 American Solar Challenge.

It’s hard to put appreciation into words, but if you choose to support our team, we really can't thank you enough. You can check out our sponsorship packet below for more info on our team, the competition, and what you get for donating to us! Funds raised on this site go directly towards the materials and equipment needed for building and testing the car. However small or big, your contribution to the team is greatly appreciated and makes a huge impact on the success of this project. If you can not donate at this time, please spread the word and share this on Facebook!
