The Last Days Project Trip

My name is Gyasi Williams-Kirtley. I'm a self-made photojournalist.
In early 2015 my Godmother passed away from breast cancer. Losing her broke my heart, more than I can ever describe or talk about. Later that same year my great uncle would pass from liver cancer. In that span of 1 year, I lost two elders and role models in my life. I became internally depressed.
Yet art has been my saving grace.
I started The Last Days Project, a polaroid photo project where I ask people how they would spend their last 24 hours.
I wanted to see how other human beings coped with loss. How did it make them feel? Helpless or motivated? What would you do if YOU only had a few months to live? Or even a day? How would this ultimatum alter worldly perceptions? Would people become kinder? More adventurous?
What started as a small social experiment with a few willing artists during a trip to Broccoli Festival in 2016 transformed into a much larger conversation.
As of today, I have cataloged over 80 polaroid-responses from subjects at different festivals and events across the USA. From Donald Glover to Naomi Campbell, to George Clinton to Steve Aoki, these small, but meaningful interactions have not only created a new sense of fearlessness in me, but it's also motivated my friends...and even strangers!
In February I exhibited my work as part of a group show at The Storefront Project gallery in the LES.
The turn out was amazing and has driven me to continue this project even further. The project has also recently been featured by Paper Magazine.
Before the end of 2017, my goal is to capture 200 photograph responses at Coachella this April, Rolling Loud Festival this May, Complex Con and Camp Flog Gnaw this November and finally Art Basel this December.
Thus far I’ve been doing this project completely on my own – and I need your support to help it grow.
I’m asking you, the public, to kindly support me in raising funds to manifest The Last Days Project trip.
