TIMELESS - CD Production

"Timeless" is a recording of music for flute and piano both old and new, which will be internationally released by Cala Records. "Timeless " represents works which are classic for flute and piano and introduces a new and significant world premiere recording of an Australian composition, Paradise of Birds, written for me by Jim Coyle this year as a result of my debut recital at the Sydney Opera House in 2016 where I performed works from my internationally acclaimed CD recording "Dancing Shadows " with music by Australian composer Miriam Hyde and recorded for the first time . It is my belief that placing Jim Coyle's new work "Paradise of Birds" amongst classics of the flute and piano repertoire will give this Australian composition the weight and importance that it deserves and it too shall become a classic in time.
The four works to be recorded are:
1. "Bilitis"-Claude Debussy as arranged by Karl Lenski.
2. "First Sonata"-Bohuslav Martinu
3. "Ballade"-Frank Martin
4. "Paradise of Birds"-Jim Coyle
Of all the music that Claude Debussy originally wrote for flute, "Bilitis" is perhaps the most neglected and underperformed despite it's great beauty and accessibility to many levels of flute players. As a set of six miniatures, students can choose some or all of the movements -a great educational tool. It's combination of music and poetry speaks clearly to me due to my singing background.
I have been playing the "First Sonata" by Bohuslav Martinu since my early teens and again it is such an accessible piece to a broad range of players. A great classic of the repertoire, it is simply beautiful music written expertly for the flute. Amongst my personal friends is the late Sue Martinu from Sydney's northern beaches , a relative of Bohuslav Martinu. Sue Martinu died this year on June 1st , after attending a performance of mine of this work three days earlier at 'The Flute Tree" in Leichhardt . Thus my new recording of this work is now of even more significance to me.
"Ballade" by Frank Martin, is a true showpiece for the flute. Having studied, lived and worked in Switzerland prior to returning to Australia, it provides the link between my Australian and Swiss heritage and is the one piece I have always wanted to record. I am always looking to promote Australian composers and their music, hence the inclusion of a new Australian work by Jim Coyle, "Paradise of Birds", which lasts approximately 20 minutes. "Paradise of Birds" is a great example of accomplished and intelligent writing for the flute following in the tradition of Debussy, Martinu and Martin. To quote Lyle Chan, "I admire Jim's music...his versatility as a composer is quite arresting and he has a gift for woodwind writing".
Like the Debussy before it, it can be broken up to suit the appropriate level of player as it is a series of miniatures depicting the characters of 12 Australian birds. This work once recorded and published will no doubt be greatly accessible to Australian HSC music students.
Andrew West and Philip Rowlands were my collaborators for my debut CD recording "Dancing Shadows", the music for flute and piano by Miriam Hyde. I have now worked with Andrew West on over five separate occasions in Australia and the United Kingdom. As a highly esteemed accompanist and chamber musician who regularly works with the worlds finest musicians, both instrumental and vocal, Andrew brings to the recording process a sound and touch that is beyond reproach. He is the pianist that not only brings the music to life, but brings out the best in my own playing. Philip Rowlands, one of today's foremost classical sound engineers and producers is the logical choice in the selection of sound engineer for my project given his history of working with myself and Andrew West. We are a team which has proven excellence in our last CD production , Dancing Shadows.
To achieve the first stage of my project I require 4 full days of rehearsal with my pianist and collaboration with composer Jim Coyle on the composition "Paradise of Birds". Recording should take place over three days at Trackdown Studios, Moore Park.
As with "Dancing Shadows", Cala Records, founded by the Australian conductor Geoffrey Simon, are enthusiastic and excited about the project and at the prospect of releasing "Timeless" onto the global market as they did with "Dancing Shadows".

Some reviews on my last CD recording with Andrew West , of music by sublime Australian composer Miriam Hyde ;
“Dancing Shadows” contains some frankly ravishing music, delicately and finely wrought, continually pulling free of its descriptive moorings to be carried off by darker undercurrents. One couldn’t hope for better advocates for this music than flautist Bridget Bolliger and pianist Andrew West .”
By William Yeoman,
GRAMOPHONE , January 2015
“A celebration of the lyrical and colourful music of Miriam Hyde (1913-2005). The disc features sparkling performances from Bridget Bolliger and Andrew West, plus readings of the composer’s poetry.” ****
By Kate Wakeling, BBC MUSIC MAGAZINE , April 2015
“ The performances of this music by flutist Bridget Bolliger and pianist Andrew West are simply not to be bettered. The crystalline clarity of Bolliger’s tonal production is the very essence of what flute sound should be, and her expressiveness and turns of phrase are most conducive to presenting this music in a way in which its composer surely would have exulted. “
