I would like to mention ... unmentionables. Chances are, you showered this morning and put on a fresh, clean pair of underwear. You may never even really think about it, but that fresh underwear gives you such a great feeling – a feeling of hygiene, confidence, and dignity.
Have you ever had to go a couple of days without changing your underwear? A camping trip or some other circumstance that may have kept you from your stock of clean underwear? How did it feel? Now imagine feeling that way all the time. Imagine not having the dignity of clean underwear all the time.
Now imagine going to a job interview – a job that would hopefully pull your family out of poverty and into a situation where you can afford a home rather than having to sleep in a shelter. The shelter provided you with clothes for your interview and you are so grateful for that – but they didn’t have underwear to give you. Your choice is to wear the ones you already have one, maybe washing them out in a sink or something similar, but they are old and worn and have holes. They may not fit properly and are uncomfortable. But you wear them, because they are all you have. Trying to project an image of confidence while being uncomfortable in your own underwear is difficult, and potential employers pick up on this kind of discomfort. Or imagine being a young person going through puberty and going to school in old, uncomfortable underwear. It is just something that everyone should have.
Underwear is the most requested but least donated item at homeless shelters and other charities that serve the homeless population. We thought it was time someone did something about that.
The Undies Movement seeks to provide shelters with a constant stock of fresh, clean underwear in all sizes for men, women, and youth. We are looking for funding to purchase new underwear to donate to shelters that serve the disadvantaged. We are starting locally, but hope that the Undies Movement will catch on and spread to other cities in the country so that no one in need has to go without clean underwear.
