TransformAStreetDog- End Suffering

Donation protected
**UPDATE: Thanks to generous donations, I was able to fund a mission to remove 6 injured, sick and pregnant dogs from the streets of Uman, Ukraine. They are now in a shelter in Kiev where they are fed everyday and protected from people who poison street dogs. We are currently trying to move them into homes and will create an update once that happens.

Watch Our Inspiring First Mission

What is the Problem?
Death of dogs by poisoning and gunshots are happening silently everyday in Ukraine. When we arrived to the town of Uman, we learned that just 2 weeks before, in a nearby town, over 60 street dogs were poisoned. The citizens woke up, and there were just dogs everywhere; unfortunately we saw the photos to prove it.

Due to a lack of programs to help dogs, a war in the east and a financial crisis, local animal advocates are left feeling overwhelmed and helpless.

Who we are
My name is Mandy Allen and for the last year I travelled to Ukraine three times for medical treatment. One of the first things I noticed was the street dogs- many of them were sick, injured, tired, old, pregnant and hungry. I learned that there are little to no government programs to help the dogs, leaving animal lovers to fight the problem themselves. To make matters worse, there is an organized group throughout Ukraine that poisons and shoot dogs, notoriously known as "dog hunters."

After my second visit to Ukraine, my beloved dog was hit by a car and killed before my eyes.  After that incident, I decided that when I returned to Ukraine, I would help fight the street dog problem.

I created a GoFundMe campaign to raise money to rescue needy dogs from the streets and create an adoption program to help the overflowing shelters.

After the initial mission I stayed in Ukraine for three months I  got to know the people who sacrifice their entire lives to run private shelters. I met the regular citizens who pick up sick and injured dogs from the street because they cannot walk by them, and as a result, end up with mini shelters in their apartments.  I recruited like-minded animal loving volunteers and together we have formed a group we call "Transform A Street Dog." A permanent website will launch in a couple months, in the meantime, a temporary site exists here.

What we do

Right now, our volunteers are helping  Gostomel Shelter (located in a village 30km from Kiev.) They currently have around 450 dogs, 80 cats and a crow with a damaged wing, named Clara.

Maxim Skripnik is the manager of the shelter. He is retired Navy, which is evident by how efficiently he runs the shelter. They run on a very modest budget, and have trouble keeping workers because of the hard work required. They depend on private donations alone, and struggle every day to make sure all of the animals' needs are met.

Maxim gives his entire life and soul to the animals, often doing all the hard labor required to keep the shelter clean and even stays with sick animals for many nights without going home.

We support Gostomel Shelter and Maxim by:

* Working to socialize his dogs and advertising them for adoption
* Finding temporary foster homes for vulnerable dogs
* Recruiting flight volunteers to bring dogs to the US and Europe where adoption rates are higher
* Financing much needed supplies such as meat, grain, vaccinations etc.
* Financing the needs of special needs animals such as puppies and disabled dogs

Sterilization Program:
Maxim tries to offer a free sterilization for people who own pets and cannot afford the surgery. Unfortunately,  there is often not enough money to go towards this program after meeting the urgent needs of dogs that are dropped off at their gates.

If we are just talking about dogs, theoretically one stray dog and their puppies can produce 67,0000 stray dogs over 6 years! Cats and their kittens can produce 420,000 stray cats over the same amount of time!

The need for more widespread sterilization in Ukraine is painfully obvious, with all of the stray dogs and puppies there are wandering the streets.

Hungry Dogs in the Snow

Every other week Transform A Street Dog volunteers make the trip to the shelter and socialize former street dogs to help get them ready for adoption. This is Keith, a retired businessman from California, he taught Jack how to sit and take a treat nicely from his hands.

The shelter does not turn away any sick and needy dogs but is full to capacity, leaving thousands of dogs out on the street and at-risk of being inhumanely killed in unspeakable ways.

Watch the amazing story of Gostomel Shelter's star resident, Lucky Dog. Lucky is one such dog that could not be turned away. It appears that someone broke his spine and left him for dead in the woods. Unbelievably, Maxim just happened to find him and now fights for Lucky's health and happiness every day.

The vets in Ukraine have stated that with special treatment Lucky may be able to improve his condition. We would like to fund a personal trainer and vet visit to Germany for him. We have started a special campaign to help Lucky.  Click here to help us give Lucky the future he deserves.

Our goals and how you can help

The only thing standing between the dogs and their miracle are donations. Every moment counts as their circumstances approach the point where their situations could take an irreversible turn for the worst. Please help us meet this month's goals to change the life of dogs that are currently suffering.

Ongoing Goal:
* Socialize dogs to prepare for adoption

Long-term Goal:
* Launch website and gain 10K+ followers on social media in order to facilitate adoption and fundraising goals

Monthly Goals:
* Arrange adoptions for at least 200 dogs from July 2018-July 2019

* Provide life-saving vaccinations and treatments for incoming puppies
  30 vaccinations/ month * $5/vaccination = $150

* Fund sterilization programs for low-income dog/cat owners
   $38/ sterilization * 10 animals/month =  $380
Theoretically, 1 stray dog and it's puppies can produce 67,000 over 6 years; so this donation could prevent the suffering of 670,000 future stray dogs.

* Buy much needed supplies such as meat and wheelbarrow tires for the shelters
  $100/ month

* Help fund veterinary care for sick and injured dogs, especially those found by citizens that could not just leave them on the street to die.
$100/ month

* Provide for special needs dogs like Lucky with the care that they need.
  $100/ month

Total= $860/ month to save lives * 12 months= $10,320

Why this cause means so much to us
If you have read this far, I am sure you must love animals as much as myself and the people of Ukraine who dedicate their lives to this heartbreaking but rewarding battle.

I imagine my own dogs when I see these dogs suffering on the street.

I think of my own precious fur-babies when I see the images of dogs dying of poison and heaped into piles in the fields.

Can you imagine your own dog going all day in the hot sun without any water?

Can you imagine your beloved friend trying to sleep through the night in freezing temperatures?

I have seen unspeakable suffering with street animals during my travels. I cannot live with these memories anymore unless I do my best to help even one dog know a life without pain and full of love and comfort.

Street dogs have the same feelings, wants and needs as house dogs, will you please help us help them? Please donate or click here to see how you can get involved.

Thank you!!
