Tree Bee Society of Great Britain

Donation protected
It all started in 2013, when TRG Pest Control began to get telephone calls for Wasps Nests in bird boxes and homes. Upon closer inspection, the nests were Tree Bee (Bombus Hypnorum) nests, a European Bee which had come over from the continent naturally in 2001 and is currently thriving. Unfortunately, some species of Bee indigenous to the UK have been wiped out, either through a lack of biodiversity or through the widespread use of pesticides, on plants which the Bees feed on and on the Bees themselves. Another 5 species of native Bumblebee are Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) priority species.

Currently, Bumble and Honey Bees are not protected under UK law, a common misconception for many members of the public. Bees and other pollinators are not mentioned in the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and never have been. Unfortunately, this means that both local UK government and independent pest control companies are killing Bumble and Honey Bees that come into conflict with members of the public. The Tree Bee Society of Great Britain hopes that through campaigning, educating and the removal and re-homing service that we offer as an alternative to killing the nests, that we can bring about a change in attitudes and a change in the law. After all, practically everything you’ve eaten today has had the help of a Bee to get to your plate. Without them, we’d struggle to get food and the UK economy would be £1bn worse off.

The Tree Bee Society now has the opportunity to exhibit and give a talk at PestEx - the number one exhibition for UK pest controllers held every two years at the ExCel Centre in London. This is a unique opportunity to promote Bee conservation and educate those present at PestEx on why encouraging all Bees and promoting Biodiversity is so important to keep humans living.

The volunteer directors of Tree Bee are paying for their own transport and accommodation down to London from the North West of England in order to attend PestEx, as well as taking unpaid time off from their own work. However, there are currently no funds available to produce marketing materials for the event.

We would like to produce Leaflets, Fridge Magnets, Pens, Keyrings, Mugs, Coasters, Stickers, Pin Badges - anything to hand out and spread the word about the importance of the Tree Bee Society and the work we carry out. It is such a fantastic opportunity to talk to those who are at the forefront of wildlife management, who every year kill thousands of Bumble and Honey Bees because they are asked to do so by members of the public who are unaware of the alternatives.

As a not-for-profit, the Tree Bee Society of Great Britain would like to ask for your help in spreading the word about the importance of all Bees. We will update the page constantly on where your money is going to help and we will bring you blog posts from the Tree Bee Team, who will be planting out their gardens to encourage biodiversity, rescuing nests and attending events to spread the word.
