Ty'Nya's Study Abroad in Spain

Hola! Como Estas?
My name is Ty’Nya Larry and I am seeking funding to assist with studying abroad in Madrid, Spain for the spring semester (January 2017-May 2017). I am currently a sophomore at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, majoring in chemical engineering. Being a high achieving low-income student from the South Side of Chicago, it has been a privilege for me to study at this institution of higher learning. As a first generation college student, it is my hope to someday give back not only to my family but also to the people and organizations (and the community) that have all helped me make it thus far.
One of the biggest reasons that I decided to attend college was to increase the percentage of African-American women in STEM careers and to change the negative narrative that often follows Chicago's youth. Through hard work and due diligence, I have been blessed with the opportunity to study abroad in Madrid, Spain for 5 months during spring 2017. I plan to immerse myself into the Spanish culture and learn from it as I subsequently learn more about myself. Traveling abroad provides global awareness and results in the ability to see things from different perspectives and help to make more informed decisions, acquiring transferable skills that will be useful in life.
While I have applied for many scholarships and grants while also saving money from my summer internship, there is still a financial gap that stands in the way of me participating in this amazing educational and cultural opportunity. I am turning to you -- my family, friends, peers and the community at large who have supported my journey and growth for so many years asking for your continued support and financial contribution (whatever it may be). I am seeking financial assistance so that I can pay for my visa, immunizations, my books, fall storage and field lessons to various Spanish monuments.
Antoine de Saint-Exupery once said, “A goal without a plan is just a wish.” I agree, and I have begun to form a plan for my future. So please consider investing in me and thank you in advance.
