VAYLA to Assist w/ Tornado Recovery

Tax deductible
Monster Tornado Rips Through New Orleans East

**UPDATE (2/9/17 9:15 PM CST) The campaign has received more than $13,000 which is incredible for 36 hours! Day 2, VAYLA purchased another $5,123.85 in supplies to support over 200 affected families in New Orleans East -- that's in addition to yesterday's 100 families.  There's still hundreds of families VAYLA has not yet reached, so please share this gofundme page with your loved ones.  We've raised our goal once more, this time to $20,000.  Anything and everything helps, whether it's volunteer time, supplies (HYGIENE products most needed), or money! Check our updates regularly to see how these funds have helped.**

**UPDATE (2/8/17 9:04 PM CST): In just 9 hours, we were able to reach our goal of $5,000! But after surveying the area and assessing the damage of people's homes on just Day 1, there's ALOT of work to be done and supplies needed.  That is why we've bumped our goal up to $15,000.  Every dollar helps, whether it's $5, 10, 20, or more.**

On February 7, 2017, multiple tornadoes unexpectedly barreled through New Orleans East, destroying powerlines, streets, and houses in among one of the areas most devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

While there were thankfully no fatalities among the seven tornadoes that touched down, hundreds of people have been devastated and displaced by gas leaks, loss of electricity, or destruction of their homes. VAYLA, with the assistance of Councilmember LaToya Cantrell and the Broadmoor Improvement Association, will be working directly with these families on the ground to assist these families through the recovery process.

Any money donated will go directly towards repairing the damages and providing basic hygenic supplies and cleaning supplies.

VAYLA is a community-based nonprofit organization that sprung from the post-Katrina recovery efforts to advocate for Village de l'Est in New Orleans East, a historically low-income African American and Vietnamese American community.

1. Who are you and where are you from?
My name is Anna Nguyen and I'm from New Orleans, LA.  I currently work as Communications Director for Councilmember LaToya Cantrell.

2.  Your relationship or contact to the parties you're raising funds for?
I am good friends with Minh Nguyen, the founder and executive director of VAYLA.

3. How will the funds be spent?
The money will be spent on construction materials and tools, as well as basic meals for volunteer efforts that will be coordinated for the clean up and rebuilding process.
While my office is organizing a donation collection for clothes, hygiene products, etc, we wanted to start this gofundme page on VAYLA's behalf for people to donate money if they could not donate items.

4.  Your withdrawal plan to get the funds from the campaign to the ultimate beneficiar/ies
Minh is listed as the beneficiary, since he is the founder and executive director of VAYLA.  All the money will go to VAYLA, as this organization will be in charge of purchasing and deploying the supplies.  Neither I, Councilmember Cantrell's office, nor the Broadmoor Improvement Association will make any money on this, and we will not be in charge of handling or dispersing the money.
