The World Student Christian Federation (WSCF) is hosting the Advocacy and Solidarity delegation to the 61st United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. It will be a global delegation made up of young women representing all the six regions of the WSCF. All the funds raised will assist the North America Region in providing accommodation of the 11 delegates who will spend two weeks in New York City attending the Commission.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The WSCF (World Student Christian Federation) is the oldest international student organization, founded in 1895. It is a world-wide ecumenical federation of over 100 national grassroots Student Christian Movements (SCMs) connecting 2 million members in more than 90 countries, with an exciting history and a 21st Century prophetic vision for peace, social, economic, gender and ecological justice. The WSCF continues to prioritize the need for women’s empowerment and gender justice in their communities and to work to translate these priorities to action that will touch the students of today. Therefore, we have decided to prioritize the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) as an advocacy priority on the international stage.
The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is a functional commission of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The sixty-first session of the Commission will take place from 13 to 24 March 2017. The Commission will address as its priority theme “Women’s economic empowerment in the changing world of work”. In addition, it will evaluate progress in the implementation of the agreed conclusions from the fifty-eighth session (2014) on “Challenges and achievements in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals for women and girls”. The Commission will discuss as a focus area/emerging issue on the “Empowerment of indigenous women”.
The Purpose of the delegation is to engage young women leaders on the topic of women’s empowerment, with the focus on how women can ensure that the indigenous woman is not left behind in this endeavor. Participants will gain useful knowledge on the subject while gaining leadership skills through active participation at the CSW but also through reciprocal discussions as a group. The delegation will use the opportunity to network with experts in order to make connections for future collaboration and grow the movement globally.
The WSCF has invited 11 young women to participate in the 61st CSW which will take place in New York on March 13rd to the 24th. In addition to these 11 young women, they will be joined by the Executive for North America and Program Director for Advocacy and Solidarity. Together they will be representing all the six regions of the WSCF (Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America and Caribbean, Middle East, and North America). The participants are all young adults or enrolled students. The money raised will provide funds for room and board of participants while in New York City for the two weeks duration of the CSW.
