A Mystery Writer's Experiment

My name is Orania Papazoglou. Under the pen name Jane Haddam, I write mystery novels.
You can check me out on Amazon, and for that matter, on Wikipedia, Goodreads and a few other places.
I am in the middle of writing a book in which one of the main characters starts a Go Fund Me page and asks people to send him money "for nothing."
For a number of complicated reasons, it's important to the plot and the solution of the mystery that this character succeed at this.
I've spent the last several days walking around this, and I finally decided that I have no idea if this would work or not.
When you write fiction for a living, you tend to pride yourself on understanding how people think and feel.
In this case, I freely admit that I just don't know.
So here it is, a Go Fund Me campaign "for nothing."
If you send money, I'll use it for cats and licorice and whatever else I want or need.
But I'll also do this.
The name of anyone who contributes at least the minimum to this will go into a hat from which I will choose three people to be named characters in this novel.
And, of course, if no one does, I'll rework my plot.
Which I really don't want to do.
It's a good plot.
