A Shower for Ina
Ina Pinkney, the Breakfast Queen, has fed many Chicagoans the most important meal of the day for over 35 years, and now needs her community near and far. As many know, Ina was diagnosed with Polio at a young age, a challenge she has faced quietly and courageously while fundraising to eradicate the polio virus worldwide. For the past decade she has been living with the consequences of Post-Polio Syndrome which left her partially, but not completely disabled.
A Recent Setback
On December 2, 2018, Ina fell on the pavement, landing full force on her already compromised polio knee and breaking her thigh bone.
She was admitted to Northwestern hospital for a surgery that included the insertion of a titanium rod into her leg. Unfortunately, other complications ensued, and Ina remained hospitalized for nearly a month before finally being released to a rehabilitation center.
Ina is now (thankfully!) home, but she is at the beginning of a very long road to recovery, and her ultimate destination is uncertain. She is currently wheelchair-bound. She cannot bend her leg and it will be many months until it is strong enough to support her.
This leaves Ina unable to stand, walk, drive or move freely. Anyone who knows Ina knows that being in this debilitative state is not easy for her. Neither is asking for help.
Which is why we’re doing that for her.
What Ina Needs Now
Ina’s most pressing need is wheelchair accessibility throughout her home, including a shower installed in her existing bathroom. To offset these costs, we’re throwing Ina a virtual “Shower” for her shower – and to support her ongoing medical and other needs in order to stay comfortably and safely at home.
These needs include:
-Installation of a wheelchair-accessible shower;
-Railings, throughout her home, to support her regaining as much ability to walk as possible;
-Replacing carpeting with safe and wheelchair-friendly flooring;
-Ongoing prescription refills (upwards of $500 a month);
-Unmet hospital/doctors’ and physical therapy bills;
-Wheel-chair accessible transportation;
-Home healthcare;
-Unplanned life expenses as a result of this immobilizing event;
-Other miscellaneous medical costs.
-Other continuing and ongoing expenses to be sure she can remain in her home (mortgage, utilities, etc.).
How Donations Will Be Handled
A trust account, which can only be accessed by a trustee who will manage the account and pay the bills, has been set up and registered. This account will be dedicated to fiscally supporting Ina’s medical and unexpected life needs as she continues to recover, as short or long as that recovery lasts
We want to give her the freedom to focus on her healing and rehab without the stress of worrying about how to make her limited finances cover all her unplanned expenses.
Any funds that remain once Ina has recuperated and is back to her feisty self will be donated to ROTARY FOUNDATION for END POLIO NOW.
Let's Shower Ina in Our Love!
For so many of us, Ina has been that bright light in an otherwise dreary week. She’s fed our bellies and our souls. She’s warmed us with her coffee and her smile. Let’s shower Ina in our love and support her during this incredibly trying time.
With loving appreciation, from Ina’s Breakfast Friends near and far!
