A World Without Walls

A World Without Walls is a project born out of the Maker/Design Studio: a program at Leadership Public School, Hayward CA. designed to empower young men and women in the fields of Engineering, Design, and Making in order to shape an influence the world they live in. The program allows students to dream big and create learning opportunities that go beyond the bounds of a traditional classroom.
The program was started in 2017 in partnership with my students, born out of their desire to create their own opportunities for experiential learning, and to learn about their world while building human connections with young people outside of the United States.
Currently, non-white, low-income students make up less than 30% of those who have the opportunity to travel abroad (U.S. News and World Report). Missed opportunities like studying abroad can translate into a dearth of students of color in international careers and leadership positions-the positions that need transformative leaders more than ever.
The world is changing and the way students learn and interact with the world is constantly evolving. Many of us understand the impact that travel and exploration has had on our lives. I believe every young person regardless of their background, their socioeconomic status, or where they live deserves to have a life changing experience in the pivotal years of high school.
Last Summer after a year of work, we met our fundraising goal and were able to travel to the Dominican Republic to teach and learn alongside young students to educate them on pollution and taking care of their beautiful communities. My students' lives are forever changed because of people like you.
This June we are planning to travel to Costa Rica to learn about the present and future challenges of preserving a fragile ecosystem and to understand the importance of a ‘Green’ orientation to economic and political development in a country that values conservation. In addition, we will spend time immersed in the communities of San Jose, San Carlos, Sarapiqui and Limon and work on collaborative art and engineering projects to support their neighborhoods as well as reforestation efforts. My students are deeply interested in conservation and how to build strong communities with a green mindset. This experience will be illuminating for them and will offer them the educational experience they desire in order to gain confidence in the science and engineering fields.
Your donation to Leadership Public Schools will be applied to the 22 students’ travel bills with the American Council for International Studies. The goal of $11,000 provides a $500 scholarship to each student’s bill. Each students' bill for the trip is $2500.
