Abby's Tiny House

My name is Abby Fisher and I am a high school senior at Decatur Township School for Excellence. As seniors, my classmates and I have the opportunity to design our own course of study based on an interest that we have. I chose sustainability because earth stewardship is a passion of mine, and I want to continue with that in my career. I wanted my project to stand out and make an impact on the community, so I started to build a tiny house.

 

Tiny houses are fairly sustainable in themselves in the sense that you are not using more resources than you need; however, I am also building it with as many recycled materials as possible, implementing Earth-friendly products and practices such as a roof made from reused metal siding and composting organic waste. My house will be used as a tool to teach others about environmental issues and what they can do to make a difference. I have big plans for this house including tours with elementary kids and taking it to several events where thousands of people will get to tour it! I am towing my house to the Indiana State Museum for the Eco Science Fair and after that, I will be showcasing at the Earth Day Indiana Festival. Hopefully, I will have additional opportunities to share my house with even more people! After I graduate this spring, I plan on living in my house to help save money during college.

I purchased an old camper in very rough shape. Since last fall, I have been working just about every day dismantling the furnishings, stripping out the old walls and insulation, and cleaning it up.  I am preparing to completely demo the camper down to the frame and build up from there, using professionals for the electrical and plumbing. Your donation will go directly towards framing lumber, insulation, electrical wiring, and other building expenses.
