Extreme Winter Ultramarathon

Donation protected
Bonjour/Hi

I’m Gaurav, an Ultra Marathon runner from New Delhi, India and PhD Research Scholar in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at University of Quebec in Montreal. For past decade, I’ve been running marathons and ultra marathons including 50km, 12 hour, 24 hour, 100 miles, etc and ran across 20 states of India. My last run in India was the chase of fresh water in Yamuna, where I ran 177km from Dehradun to Yamumotri in two days.

I’m also one among India’s barely a couple of runners to feature in Winter Ultramarathon of 100 miles of longer, that I did at Beast of Burden 100 mile  Ultra in Buffalo, New York. On February 18th, 2017, I take on Actif Epica 130km Ultra in Winnipeg, Manitoba in extreme dead of Canadian Winters (http://actifepi.ca/race-roster-2017/). Actif Epica is a self-supported 25 hours/130km race in unforgiving winter of prairies in Canada on legendary Crow Wing Trail (Trans Canadian Trail) with temperatures dipping below -35C with winds strong as 50 kph every year. The trail is not marked, hence, runner is responsible for navigation in cold blizzards using cue sheets and compass or GPS (if that works), all while carrying mandatory survival gear and food. It is also a qualifying race for Iditarod Trail Invitational, World's longest and toughest Winter Ultramarathon.

No runner from India (only a handful outside of North America) has ever featured in Actif Epica, making me first to do so. However, such races impose their own challenges even for most prepared and runners are entirely dependent on proper navigation and impeccable gear for their survival. Every minor thing a runner does may turn out to be difference between winning the race and risking frostbite to lose fingers/toes/limbs, and the race.

I’m training to run Tuscobia 160 mile, Arrowhead 135 mile and Actif Epica 100 mile soon, all in span of 45 days, to earn the very rare “Order of Hrimthurs”, that has crowned only three runners in history till date. Actif Epica 130km will qualify me for the above next year.

In order to procure the necessary race gear and make it the start line from Montreal, it’d cost me quite some amount. I’m able to manage most part of through savings, however, fall short by $700 to meet requirements, including travel to Winnipeg.

I’d be honoured if you can contribute whatever possible at earliest, so I could once again push myself to the extreme limits in toughest winter conditions, and add another page in Ultrarunning history for my nation.

Thanks a lot for your support.
