Akins Fine Arts Performs in LA

This year, Akins Choir, Orchestra, Guitar, and Piano has the opportunity to travel to Los Angeles to perform at the University of Southern California for some of the best educators in their fields. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for our low-income students, but let's talk about how we got here.
Mr. Crockett, the orchestra and guitar director, and I spend almost every single day bouncing ideas off of each other to further our programs and grow as teachers. Last year, we decided to take our students on a combined trip together. It was in the planning phase for a few months, but when we found world-class musicians to work with our top groups, it was a done deal. We will take our students to Los Angeles, CA to perform and work with some of the best musicians in the classical music field.
As we talked with our students about the trip, excitement grew. They were so thrilled to be in a master-class/clinic setting with top professionals in the guitar, orchestral and choral fields. The opportunity to visit Disneyland and Universal Studios is also an exciting adventure to award them for their hard work as musicians and overall students. However, the cost of the trip is prohibitive for some (if not all) of our students.
As teachers in a low-income school community, our students don't have the same resources as those from other schools. We do our best to give them an equitable experience, but always want to do more and they work incredibly hard toward musical and social growth every single day. For many, this will be their first time on an airplane and even out of the State of Texas.
We do everything we can to help those students that do not have the resources to attend this trip. However, more money is needed than we anticipated in making this a realization. Things change - parents lose jobs, people move away, medical emergencies arise, and it is our job to make certain that those changes don't cause students to lose out on a once in a lifetime experience. We need at least $20,000 to help support those who are not financially able to continue payments.
All students that attend are academically eligible with passing grades in all their classes - they just need your help to get over the last hurdle. We can't wait to show them a whole new world of thought and give them a great experience of music at a high level. Please consider supporting us to help get them there.
