Our Current Need

For others, a vehicle is just a means of transportation. A way to get from point A to point B. A form of convenience. For the youth in our care at Alternate Shelter Society, a vehicle provides a means of escape and a reason to smile. Let me explain how.

Alternate Shelter Society provides short-term residential services to at-risk youth in care who have faced a variety of challenges at an early age. One component of their care plan is daily recreation which allows the youth to bond with one another and with the staff. Recreation is something our youth look forward to as the possibilities are endless so long as the activity is safe, feasible and family friendly. Recreation provides the rare opportunity for our youth to forget about their problems and be a kid again. Sometimes it is even the only reason why our youth come home as opposed to staying out at night which can pose safety concerns. In the past our youth have gone bowling, swimming and ice skating. They have gone to the theater to watch a movie or gone to The Fair at the PNE in the summer. Having a working, reliable and safe vehicle removes the restriction of having the activities at the resource by increasing variety and keeping our recreational program interesting.

In recent months our recreational program has been limited due to our second-hand 1997 Dodge Caravan being prone to issues that have been costly to repair, again and again. Unfortunately we do not have the excess funds to continue fixing it nor do we have the excess funds to purchase a new one. As a result, we are humbly asking for donations to purchase a newer van. Please know that your donation is indirectly helping us in giving our youth something to smile about. As we are a small non-profit, any donation, large or small, goes a long way and I thank you on behalf of Alternate Shelter Society.

About Us

Alternate Shelter Society is a small non-profit that emerged in March 1977 with the goal of providing residential and support services to youth in need. We were initially formed by a group of caregivers and other interested community members who felt new and flexible models were needed to better serve youth in need and their families. Our youth are those often described as high risk, at-risk or even behaviourally disordered. These youth come to us with a variety of characteristics including: physical, emotional and sexual abuse issues; high risk/at-risk behaviours; drug and alcohol misuse or addiction; behavioural concerns and mental health disorders. Our goal is to reintegrate these youth back into their communities and, where appropriate, their families. Services provided to our youth include stabilization, recreational programs and life skills programs. Over the last 35 years we have run numerous programs for our youth based on their ever changing needs.
