Amanda “Bear” Marie Gates (Bevins) January 6th, 1984 – December 13th, 2016
As a child, Bear would often spend time on the wharf in Monterey with her Great-Grandfather, Ralph Lavin, and brother, Nicholas. One day, when Bear was about 6 years old, she and her brother were feeding fish to the sea lions. Bear was throwing mackerel into the water when a fearless pelican standing on the railing next to her snatched a fish out of her hands. The pelican defiantly stood there with the fish in the pouch underneath its beak. Bear was incensed. She screamed “that’s my fish!” and grabbed the pelican. Through a flurry of feathers and snapping little girl Bear managed to open the pelican’s beak, reach into its pouch, and extract her fish. After her victorious assault the pelican flew away and Bear threw her fish to the sea lions. Then she started to cry. That was our Bear: tough, determined, and sweetly vulnerable.
Amanda was born in Truckee, CA. She attended Monterey High where she was a standout athlete. She practiced nursing for 10 years in Pleasanton, CA and Reno, NV. Her parents, Ann and James, brother, Nicholas, and a large group of loving family and friends survive her. She will be missed.
Amanda’s years at Monterey High School were some of her favorite years. She made many lasting friendships as an athlete. Funds will be used 100% for scholarships to female athletes attending institutes of higher education after graduation from high school. The scholarship will honor the life and passions of Amanda and provide opportunities for those women who embody Amanda's virtues of tenacity and kindeness.
