AMBER WALKER:

Amber C. Walker will enroll at New York University this fall to earn her Masters of Arts in Digital Journalism. Since she left her job at Epic Systems in 2016 to pursue journalism full-time, Walker has worked with several mainstream and community-based publications in Madison- including The Capital Times, Umoja Magazine, Madison 365, Our Lives Magazine, The Madison Times, and WORT FM.

As a former teacher, it is important for Walker to keep kids and families at the center of her work. She is immensely grateful to the Madison community for allowing her into their homes, schools, and lives to tell these important stories. One of the greatest rewards of her work is the feedback she receives from readers for amplifying the experiences of students who identify as people of color, LGBTQ+, and/or low income - perspectives people felt were not often reflected in the mainstream media.

The Studio 20 program at NYU will allow Walker to expand her craft through learning multimedia content creation and emerging media strategies. Ultimately, Walker wants to be her own boss through a career in freelance writing or establishing her own publication.

Although NYU awarded Walker a full-tuition scholarship to fund her studies, she did not receive any financial support for other expenses. Given the condensed and rigorous nature of the program, she was recommended not to obtain an internship until after her first semester. As a first-generation college student from a low-income background, she cannot rely on her family for financial assistance. Supporting this campaign will help Walker with rent, food, and course materials during her first few months in New York City.

CARLA WILLIAMS:

I am overjoyed to announce that this fall I will be continuing my education in the journalism masters program at the University of California - Berkeley. I have an undergraduate degree in English with a concentration in journalism from Edgewood College. I am a Madison native so I have been propelled to give back to the community that I was brought up in. Through my journalism work I strive to create equity and give a voice to African American women and marginalized people. I have a locally-based podcast that airs once a month; each month I strive to discuss issues of African American women and marginalized people in my community. Through WORT radio, I have volunteered about four hours per week for the past two years. I’ve been a communications coordinator for Freedom Inc; through this organization I strive to bring awareness to my community of the injustices to African American and Southeast Asian people in the Madison area. I have interned with the Cap Times and during my time there, I tried to bring as many stories I could of local successes of African American people. I was a freelance reporter for UMOJA magazine, one of the few African American-focused magazines in Madison. My research at UC-Berkeley will be nothing short of the efforts I’ve made in my community as I will continue to strive to create spaces for African American women and marginalized people to share their stories. I am grateful and humbled beyond measure from the support of my community and the encouragement and guidance I was given thus far in my career. I am concerned about the high cost of out-of-state tuition for this graduate program, the cost of moving from Wisconsin to California, and being able to afford all of my expenses when I’m unable to work full-time. If you would like to contribute to my transition and education, any assistance would be appreciated.
