ContainIt: West Charlotte

Alongside substantial food and water, shelter is an indisputable vital for leading a decent human life. Nonetheless, going without this basic necessity, and struggling to obtain the other two, is a hapless reality that too many within our community know all too well. Of the 11,448 North Carolinians deemed homeless, the city of Charlotte claims a staggering 2,014 of these people--almost 20%--according to the Urban Ministry.

As a student of West Charlotte, Myah Hobgood’s reality must often cross paths firsthand with many of these people’s reality, for the Beatties Ford region has seen a noticeably high concentration of poverty and homelessness in comparison to other areas of Charlotte-Mecklenburg. Finding it hard to ignore the prevalence of this reality on a daily basis, Myah Hobgood, in partnership with ContainIt, is currently embarking upon an extensive project as apart a campaign against the national homeless epidemic as she looks to construct a functioning Tiny House in efforts to combat this growing problem.

With a lack of experience in construction and the execution of this task, West Charlotte High School will partner with Covenant Day School and their community project, ContainIt. They seek to collectively engage our local community as a whole to create positive change for the impoverished peoples of this world using sustainable methods.

With the help of ContainIt, they hope to bring awareness of homelessness in Charlotte, North Carolina and provide a solution in which could be used not only in Charlotte but the nation.

ContainIt: West Charlotte hopes to combat homelessness in the Charlotte community by building alternative housing in the form of tiny houses. Through our partnership with ContainIt, we hope to bring awareness of homelessness and provide a solution that could be used not only in Charlotte but the nation.
