3 months in South Africa
Donation protected
My name is Angela Karigambe, I am 19 years old, and I'm currently a student at the University of Nottingham.
I'm heading to South Africa, Cape Town this year in June for 3 months to volunteer with an NGO called S-cape who focus on the restoration of victims of human trafficking and also, thanks to Gap Year South Africa, I will be mentoring young girls in a township called Masiphumelele. However this is going to be very costly and I need YOUR help!
Cost breakdown:
Gap Year South Africa is covering everything I will need during my 3 months in South Africa. The cost is £2,814 which covers:
- Accommodation (volunteer house: wifi, laundry and security)
- Catered food (3 meals a day)
- Transport (I'll be commuting daily)
- Staff and services in country support
This doesnt include other expenses such as:
- Flights
- Travel insurance etc.
So overall this trip is going to cost over £3,000.
I've managed to pay a deposit to secure my place for the mean time. However, I've been given a deadline to pay the rest of the money by, which is the 5th of May, 2017.
Why South Africa?
South Africa is close to home, and home is Zimbabwe, which is where I grew up. There aren't any organisations in Zimbabwe that I'm aware of who raise awareness of human trafficking and help victims. However, after researching I came to find South Africa has many NGO's. I'm also familiar with the culture in South Africa having been brought up to it's neighbouring country Zimbabwe. The opportunity to make a difference in that part of the world where I grew up would be a dream come true.
Why are you volunteering in this field?
Human trafficking is a form of modern day slavery and the fastest growing crime in the world that not many people are aware of. The more I started to find out about it, the more I felt moved to want to make a difference in this area and raise awareness and one of the ways to do that was by volunteering.
Why 3 months?
3 months is the minimum time that most NGO's, especially in this particular field, accept volunteers but also is enough time for me to leave an impact.
South Africa isn't just it, but rather, the starting point of my journey of abolishing human trafficking in the world. Changing the world doesn't happen instantly but it starts by changing someone's world, which is the heart behind my desire to helping these victims of human trafficking and bringing hope.
However, this cannot happen without YOUR contribution. I really can't do this without you. There's been so many setbacks to get to this point, and but it has been worth it. Feel free to give as much as you want or as little as you can - every penny counts!
God bless you!
