Anna-Kay’s Liver Transplant:The Journey
How my life changed in 2015 after being diagnosed with end-stage liver disease
It’s astonishing how life can change in an instant. Can you imagine being told you have a condition resulting in end-stage liver disease and reduced life expectancy? My name is Anna-Kay Findleter and this is the heartbreaking news I received in 2015. At age 24, I was diagnosed with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC), which is a chronic liver disease characterized by inflammation of the bile ducts. With this diagnosis, my health has taken a nose-dive and without an immediate liver transplant surgery, my chance of
living with this disease is very grim.
How I’ve been coping since my diagnosis – the hospital journey
The last few years have been the hardest of my life. I have been tried and tested, but I refuse to give in. I always look at life with hope and deep optimism. Each day, I am encouraged by the words of the late great Mahatma Gandhi which says, “In the midst of darkness, light persists.”
After my diagnosis in 2015 at Eastern Medical Maine, I was recommended to visit John Hopkins Hospital to do further tests and evaluation regarding the stage and state of my PSC. I was placed on a treatment plan and I followed up consistently with my medications. Unfortunately, and inevitably in 2018, my disease worsened, and the PSC transitioned to an acute stage. I pursued several medical consultations and opinions - all pointed in the direction of urgent liver transplant surgery. I have spent weeks in the hospital because my PSC made me so sick, weak and incapacitated. I was admitted at UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida awaiting a liver transplant, which is the ONLY way my life can be saved. I was discharged from the hospital based on no proof of medical insurance and the fact that we cannot afford the hefty financial cost for the liver transplant.
The Hospital Journey continues....
I have developed further complications over the past few days so I am currently admitted at Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale. The doctors are conducting more tests and monitoring my chronic condition. My liver is at its end-stage and I desperately need to have that life saving transplant.
No Medical Insurance
I made the transition to the United States a few years ago to further my education. I got married in 2017 with dreams of starting a family, sadly these noble dreams were shattered when my condition worsened in January 2018. At this junction we are unable to secure medical insurance coverage based on my pre existing condition. So, crowdfunding is the only alternative for survival . Having a life threatening disease with no medical insurance is any and everyone's worst nightmare.
I want to fulfill my dream of pursuing a career in Banking and Finance
Before my diagnosis, I was full of life and had plans to pursue a career in Banking and Finance. I am a caring, compassionate, thoughtful person who is always looking out and standing up for my family, friends and acquaintances. While undergoing treatment for PSC and dealing with the multiple symptoms and side effects of my disease- jaundice, fever, pain in the abdominal area and weakness. I volunteered and worked with various social groups and organizations. I spent considerable time volunteering with the Jamaica Cancer Care and Research Institute in Kingston, Jamaica.
How can you help
I like to view the glass of life as half full rather than half empty. Like my failing health, my spirit is now being challenged. I am in dire need of financial assistance to defray the expensive costs for a liver transplant, the post-surgery and recovery medical fees. With your compassion and immediate donation, this will definitely give me a fighting chance to defeat PSC which will prolong my life and certainly provide a better quality of life.
Please assist me in sharing this post with your friends and family.
Below is a break-down of my estimated medical costs:
Liver transplant - USD$500,000
Housing - USD$750 per month
Post-Surgery Medication Cost -USD$5,000 per month
There is hope, and that hope is you. Through your kindness today, you are giving me a chance for the future. I am determined to fight this disease!
Your generosity will go a long way in renewing my hope to fulfill my dreams and live a long, healthy and prosperous life. Thanks in advance for your donation.
