Asian Pacific Islander American Spoken Word & Poetry Summit 2015
This will be Chicago’s second time hosting the Summit since 2003.
Ultimately, the 2015 Summit wouldn’t be possible without the support of generous donations by proactive individuals such as yourselves.
Help us by donating to the event so we can find the best venue, institute registration, and make the Summit run as smoothly and successfully as possible. You can help us continue providing a safe space for the celebration of the arts and a forum for the discussion of social issues.
Our goal is to raise $5000 by May 31, 2015 to continue the coverage for venue, food, & public transportation; ultimately we’d like to raise $10,000 by July 31, 2015.
Vision
To reunite Asian-Americans in an open space where they can express their emotions, feelings, thoughts, and ideas through spoken word performances.
Mission
The APIA Summit 2015 will reunite the Asian-American community by hosting an open space for growth and performances through workshops, interactive communication, and showcases.
History
The first Asian-Pacific Islander-American Spoken Word and Poetry took place in Seattle in 2001. The Summit has served as a safe place for Asian-American artists to share their experiences, create their art, and explore their identities. Each semi-annual summit since then has been hosted all across the nation, from Seattle (‘01), Chicago (‘03), Boston (‘05), New York (‘07), San Francisco (‘09), and Minnesota (‘11).
In the 1990s to early 2000s, spoken word and poetry groups such as Young Asians with Power! (YAWP), Mango Tribe, I Was Born with Two Tongues, and The Pacifics sprouted up to mobilize and inspire Asian-American community members. These groups represented local spoken word artists and activists in the initial 2003 APIA Spoken Word & Poetry Summit in Chicago.
One of the reasons Chicago was selected as the location for the 2015 Summit was its many Asian-centric neighborhoods, such as Devon, Uptown, Chinatown and Albany Park. As an intersection of Southeast Asian, East Asian, South Asian, and Pacific Islander immigrants, Chicago is the perfect meeting ground due to its spoken word legacy and diversity.
