Kili Climb For Tanz Hospital & Kids
MeHi, I'm Ashley. I'm an Operating Department Practice student currently in my 3rd and final year at Glasgow Caledonian University.
The PlanIn December 2016, I came out to Tanzania to do a five week elective surgical placement in Arusha's Mt Meru Regional Hospital where they have three operating theatres; major, obstetrics and opthalmic.
On Sunday the 8th of January I'll be joined by two friends, Suz and Lindsay to climb Kilimanjaro. I am climbing Kili to raise money for two causes:
Mt Meru Hospital I will locally purchase as much as I can from the list of items that the hospital have informed they are in need of. These include sterile and non sterile gloves, stethoscopes, IV cannulas, anti-septic solution, finger lancets, gycometer, blood pressure machine (electic and manual), themometers, pulseoxymeter, manual suction machine, airway accessories, themometers, as well as adrenaline and diclofenac for the emergency drug trolly in casualty (which I have witnessed to be always lacking).
The supplies will be delivered to the hospital on my last day of pla cement, Friday 6th January (as I will won't have much time between xoming off Kili and my onward travel as I also plan to stop off at an orphanage to donate supplies).
Fruitful OrphanageFruitful Orphanage is an orgphange and day care centre in Arusha which opened in 2014. Their vision; "Have a peaceful society where children develop to their full basic needs and live a productive life." The orphanage has indictated that along with basics like clothing, bedding, toiletries, books etc, they also require help with the monthly rent, food for the month, gas bottles refilled twice monthly and with their solar panel installion in the orphan accommdation. I would like to raise enough money to donate a variety of the basics, as well as giving a monetary donation towards their monthly expenses and solar panel installation.
Kilimanjaro - Monday 16th January 2017Kilimanjaro's Uhuru peak (the highest on the African continent) stands at 5,895m (19,341ft) and is known as the roof of Africa and is in the "extreme" level of high altitude.
I will be climbing Kilimanjaro, starting on Monday 9th January 2017, with a company called Climb Kili; they pay their porters a fair wage and have one of the highest safety and summit success rates. I will be going via the Lemosho route over 8 days, giving me the best chance for acclimatisation, and therefore reaching the summit.
From research, this is sure to be an amazing experience, yet very much mentally and physically challenging. I planned to train and get as much trekking experience here in Scotland before leaving. Although the Scottish munros don't quite compare in size to Kilimanjaro, at the very least they helpped me break in my boots!
I'd love to raise a minimum of £1000 to split evenly between the hospital and orphanage. Any amount you can donate, big or small, will go towards purchasing as many of the items listed above as possible.
Your sponsor/donation will truly make a difference to the care the hospital provides its patients, and the quality of life of the children in the orphanage.
Prior to climbing Kili, at the end of my hospital placement, the money raised so far will be split in half and supplies for the hospital purchased.
Any remaining money after coming down from the mountain will be cashed on Wednesday 17th to buy supplies for the hosptial and will donated that day before my onward travel out of Arusha.
If you have any questions at all, please feel free to get in touch.
Asante sana
Ashley
NB - I am fully funding the entire trip and Kilimanjaro climb, all money raised is soley for the hospital and orphanage.
