Assist Gambian Refugees

Donation protected
As you may be aware, The Gambia held presidential elections on December 1, where Adama Barrow defeated  the incumbent now ex-President Jammeh, who ruled the country  for 22 years. Jammeh at first conceded and then decided he was not going to leave, generating fear and uncertainty among the population about his intentions and their safety. The UNHCR is reporting that over 45,000 people have fled into Senegal as the uncertainty continues. (http://www.unhcr.org/5881deb74.html)

Adama Barrow was sworn in as President on Thursday, Jan. 19, at the Gambian Embassy in Dakar. ECOWAS, supported by the AU and the UN Security Council, have given Jammeh a deadline of Friday, Jan. 20, at 12:00 pm to leave the country.

Gambians have been fleeing the urban areas in large numbers, fearing repercussions from Jammeh's refusal to leave office. As the situation drags on, and people continue to be displaced from their homes, resources are scarce, and many require assistance.

On the border of Gambia, efforts to help those who have moved from their homes continues. A message from an organizer on the ground:

"We are a group of friends who have been exiled to Dakar prior to the crisis because of our political activism. Being there and seeing the influx of our sisters and brothers as refugees on the border between Senegal and Gambia moved us to do something. So we set up an initiative amongst ourselves with our little means and couple of donations and set out. We are now running out of finances and logistics as more Gambians arrive. Please support in any way you can as we struggle through this."

-Alieu Bah

Alieu and his companions are assisting a group of about 1,000 refugees to secure basic necessities and food. The funds from this campaign will be going directly to their efforts to help those who have been displaced. More people are arriving each day as the impasse in the Gambia continues. Please support if you can!

This initiative and use of funds is intended to be transparent; send me a message to see exactly where your funds will be used. Thank you!
