While Spencer’s event was officially canceled, in an interview with The Plainsman, Spencer asserted that he still will be showing up on Auburn’s campus on Tuesday to give a speech saying that, “‘I will give a speech on their campus. It is a public place. I think Auburn University is naive and has totally misunderstood who I am if they think that I am going to politely back out of this. I will be there 100 percent.”’
It’s true, the university is a public place. Unfortunately, there is no legal basis to stop Spencer from coming on campus on Tuesday.
Here is what we propose:
We believe that students need to stand, LOUDLY and PEACEFULLY, in solidarity with our minority population and against Spencer. What we want is to get as many people as possible to occupy the public space on Auburn’s campus: Samford Lawn, Cater Lawn, the Quad, the Green Space, the Concourse, etc.
This is what we hope to accomplish:
1. Deny Richard Spencer a platform on which to speak
2. Send a message to the minority population at Auburn that, as their peers, we will not tolerate their marginalization.
3. Demand that the University take stronger stances on inclusion and diversity and be more vocal about their solidarity with the minority population at Auburn.
In order to achieve these goals, we will be holding a music festival on campus on Tuesday the 18th. We need funds for equiptment (generator, PA, etc), food for our guests, and promotion. All funds not used will be donated to the NAACP. Thank you so much for participating in this cause!
