As a child, I always had my head in a book. I went to the library every day after school and would beg to be dropped off there on Saturdays. I always say books made me “smart” and, like for other kids, books allowed me to feed my imagination. My book journey became even more interesting when I started to discover more women who look like me. The words of Toni Morrison (who once lived and worked in Syracuse, New York) Nikki Giovanni, Alice Walker, Joan Morgan, and other Black female writers shaped who I am as a writer and as a Black woman.
Historically, there is no place that compare to what Black-owned bookstores serve in our communities. They have always been a place for a certain kind of community togetherness and empowerment. I always dreamed of visiting a bookstore filled with books written by Black female writers. Toni Morrison once said if there’s a book that you want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it. There is a book bar I would love to spend a rainy Saturday afternoon in that doesn’t exist, but will when I bring it to fruition. In 2024, I will launch a digital space where I will sell books and other related items. In the fall of 2025, I will open up the first book bar in Syracuse, New York.
