The Story:
Phil Evans has always been an outstanding athlete! - Growing up he played many sports including Australia Rules Football, Indoor Cricket, Outdoor Cricket, Mixed Netball, Rugby, Tennis and Golf.
Five years ago Phil suffered a car accident, where he broke his T11-T12 Vertebrae, unfortunately this left him permanently paraplegic.
As you can imagine, this accident changed Phil’s life forever and it hasn’t been easy for him nor his family - But Phil is a tough guy, and he has adapted his life, goals and dreams to this unexpected change!
Phil has been actively looking for work which has proven difficult, but he has had some successful short-term jobs. He recently coached a senior Whitfords AFL side, where he was able to give back to this club where he payed A Grade Football in 2009-2010 & 2012-2013.
After his accident, Phil thought he could never play a sport again, until he found basketball; which also changed his life!
Basketball has given Phil a real feeling of belonging again and it is something he wishes to pursue. He started playing social comp in a-grade at Herb Graham Recreation Centre (which is home to wheelchair sports).
Last December he was selected in the Perth Wheelcats, which is in the Australian National wheelchair basketball league and has been competing once a month in the national competition and playing 3-4 games over the weekends.
Recently, Phil has been offered a full-time scholarship to the University of Arizona (USA). As part of this scholarship he will be representing the University of Arizona Basketball team.
How can you help Phil?
An estimated of $20,000 AUD are required to help Phil chase his dream of completing his university degree while playing for the University of Arizona's Basketball team.
This is how the money will be used:
So far, Phil has been playing basketball with a borrowed wheelchair, but now that he'll be moving to another country, he needs to buy a custom-made basketball wheelchair!
He also needs the required funds to travel and bring with him the required equipment to Arizona, United States - Which is about 15,600 Km away from his hometown, Perth, Western Australia.
This fundraising was an initiative of Ian Knox, Managing Director of HFM Asset Management . As a company we are supporting Phil and want to help him make his dreams come true, we believe in paying forward so we have kickstarted this fundraising by donating $2,500 towards this cause and now we are asking our friends, families, colleagues, suppliers, clients and anyone reading this story to please help us help Phil!
Your contribution will help Phil get closer to his dreams :)
No donation is too small...Each dollar counts!
