Who are you? Simple question, but oh, what a complicated answer.
I’m Rebecca Zickefoose. I’m just a girl who wants to do a thing. I’m a mom, a wife, a tea aficionado, a reader, an explorer, an amateur geologist, a self-proclaimed life-long learner, a daughter, a sister, a person in the world. What a hard question! Who am I?! I’m no one special, I’m someone special. I want to do a thing, it’s no big deal--it’s everything to me.
What it comes down to is this: I’m just another person in the world--BUT STILL I’m a person in this world. I live my life day-to-day, just like you. I’m just. Like. you. But I’m me.
Exploring this person who is me has become my passion. Learning about myself, and how I react to the world around me, has made me more aware than ever how I affect the world. And what I’ve discovered is I never knew I affected the world around me. But I do. And all of a sudden I realize I have a responsibility to affect the world around me in a positive way if I can.
And I think I can. Through yoga. And through teaching.
I want to share my experience and guide you in your own experience. Yours won’t look anything like mine. Not only is that OK, it’s as it should be!
Yoga, for me, became a way to learn about myself. What started as a way to move my body turned into a practice that pushed me to be better. At first, it was just to be better at poses, then to have a better attitude about life. Recently, I’ve found a better attitude about myself. A new “me” emerged. It's a “me” that understands myself better, connects more with my family, my community, and my God. It’s a “me” that challenges but forgives. A “me” with nothing to prove. A softer but stronger “me.” I don't know if yoga is the answer for everyone or even the answer at all. But I do know it's important to listen to your heart and your gut and remain true to yourself.
The next step for me is Yoga Teacher Training. With this certificate I would be recognized as an official instructor. I could use movement as a way to connect with my community and with people, just like you, on a personal level. My agenda is simple: I want to relate to you. I believe people are relational beings and we thrive when we connect with each other, from a one-on-one basis up to a worldly level. It’s important.
So I’m asking you to believe in me and my agenda and to help if you can. It’s not easy for me to ask for help. I’ve always thought of myself as independent and never wanted anybody for anything. The longer I live the more I disagree with “that girl who was me.” I believe we need each other. And now I need you.
Like everyone, I face the challenges of our society. I’m a full time working mom who uses her free time to work some more. For the last 13 years I’ve worked at a local ministry running a second-hand store. If you’ve ever worked in ministry you understand you aren’t in it for the money. But I feel it’s my place.
In the last couple of years I’ve also volunteered as a soccer coach and I teach ballet one evening a week. These opportunities opened a door in my heart I didn’t know was closed. I’ve realized teaching is something I’m meant to do.
I invite you to see the value in my intention and, if you are so inclined, to support my endeavor however you feel called.
I appreciate you more than you know. Thank you for believing in me.
