Baby Jerico was born premature (34-35 weeks) on November 18, 2015 at the UST Hospital. He has been confined at the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) since then.
Baby Jerico's mom was referred to the UST Hospital because the doctors saw congenital anomalies in her 7th month scan. She went to UST on November 16 for her first checkup and was admitted on the same day. The doppler ultrasound showed that there was absent diastolic flow to Jerico. He was delivered by CS two days after.
On his first day of life, the doctors found out that he had an imperforate anus and had to undergo surgery. We were all worried and prayed hard that he make it. And he did. He now has a colostomy and will have another surgery when he turns one. Because of the surgery, he has to use a colostomy bag (price range 100-300/bag), each bag can be used for 3-5 days.
We brought a sample of Baby Jerico's blood to PGH for karyotype analysis. His congenital scan showed markers for Trisomy 21. It took 3-4 weeks before we got the result, and it confirmed that he has Down's Syndrome. We are sure that he will rock that extra chromosome.
He also has a congenital heart defect called PDA (Patent ductus arteriosus). From Wikipedia, "The ductus arteriosus is a fetal blood vessel that closes soon after birth. In a PDA, the vessel does not close and remains "patent" (open), resulting in irregular transmission of blood between the aorta and the pulmonary artery." This heart defect is causing him to have congestion in his lungs, making it difficult to breathe. He needs oxygen support until his PDA is closed. Baby Jerico needs to undergo another surgery (we don't know when yet), for his PDA.
He was born at 1.3 kgs and his pedia-neonatologist asked us to buy Human Milk Fortifier (50 sachets/box) to help baby gain weight faster. Baby Jerico gets fed 12 times a day, they use one sachet with each feeding. Each box which costs PhP 4,000 is only good for 5 days. We know that it works because he know weighs 2.14 kgs. Praise God!
Baby Jerico's medical expenses are way above our combined income. We have already depleted our savings and our immediate families contributed what they could.
We know that Baby Jerico is a fighter, imagine having to go through and survive surgery on your first day of life. One day, we will tell him his story. When he grows up, we will tell him that there is good in the world and that he should believe in the kindness of strangers.
Please consider making a financial gift to help pay for Baby Jerico's medical expenses. We also ask that you keep us and Baby Jerico in your prayers.
Thank you.
