On May 11, 2018 there was another school shooting, this time at Highland High school in Palmdale, CA. That morning, Facebook timelines were flooded with posts from parents, children and people in the community who were afraid. Reading all of the messages, one can only be reminded of the 20+ school shootings that have occurred this year in the U.S. alone. Instead of getting mad at government officials and asking “What are you going to do?”, we began to wonder “What can we do?”
As Theodore Roosevelt once said:
“Do Something Now. If not you, who? If not here, where? If not now, when?”
So here we are! Let’s give back to the community and remind the students that we are here rooting for their success. With the community's help, we can come together to show our support and let them know that they are not alone. So let’s start the school year off with a surge of positivity! Help us pour into the youth with our presence and words of encouragement to let them know they matter and show them we care!
On Saturday, July 28, 2018, W3 VYB3 is hosting an event called "Back to School Blessing." The event will be held at Marie Kerr Park in the city of Palmdale from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Throughout the day there will be team building exercises, youth empowerment sessions, food, games, sports activities and an all around good time! In addition, we will be giving away school backpacks filled with supplies so they can start the school year equipped. You have the opportunity to be a part of this blessed event by becoming a sponsor and donating a backpack to a student for only $25! Sponsor one, two or as many as you can to make a difference in a young person’s life.
Each new backpack* will include: folders, notebooks, packs of pencils, pens and markers, scissors, glue sticks, Post-its, crayons, pencil pouch, a ruler, eraser & pencil sharpener.
