Welcome to the fundraising campaign of the Badass Women of Hearthstone! We want to raise prize money for a Hearthstone tournament for women.
Here's our story:
When I (Ephyra) talked with toastthebadger about women tournaments, we both agreed at first that we don’t want to receive special treatment because of our gender in a competitive environment where gender doesn’t play a role. However, we also both agreed that there were way less women to be seen in Hearthstone tournaments as we would expect from the amount of female players.
There are a number of reasons for that phenomenon. From our own and other women’s experience we knew that being the only female competitor in a tournament can be intimidating. Also research implies that female role models are a significant factor when it comes to women and girls entering male dominated fields. But if the lack of women in competitive Hearthstone is a huge part of the reason why there are so few women in competitive Hearthstone, we have kind of a vicious circle. So our goal with this tournament is to break the cycle by not only highlighting the women who already play HS competitively but also by providing a comfortable environment for female players to dip their toes into the competitive scene.
toastthebadger already set up a Hearthstone tournament for women, which she unfortunately had to cancel due to her sickness. She died on the 29th of April but I know that she would have wanted us to continue with what she started.
Here's our goal:
Our first goal is to make the tournament toastthebadger planned happen, which means a Swiss bracket over 8 weeks followed by top 8 playoffs on NA and EU servers. We would love to have a decent amount of prize money as well as weekly prizes like card packs randomly drawn for all players who competed. We want to stream and cast games from all weeks and also the playoffs.
Our overall goal is not to create a womens’ tournament that is equal to other larger tournaments but to create a testing ground for women to play competitively and to cast games. We want to help them gain confidence and experience, to promote their talent and finally helping them to transition into the pro Hearthstone scene. If we manage to raise more money than our set goal, we will make additional tournaments, finance coaching sessions and anything else that helps support women and a diverse Hearthstone community.
What we already have:
- More than 400 followers on Twitter
- More than 40 supporters including well known members of the Hearthstone scene like L0rinda and StaceyofGotham
- A coaching lesson by TerrenceM and a coaching lesson by Teebs for a random winner participating in the tournament
- Dreamhack tickets for both winners of the NA and EU bracket
- Tournament bracket administration powered by Matcherino with support by Th3RaT
- Experience in all aspects of tournament organisation including stream production
- A Twitch channel
- A lot of motivation and ideas
What we don’t have (yet):
- Prize money :)
FAQ
How do you want to use the money?
Each bracket (EU and NA) will have a 1000€ (about $1130) prize pool if we reach our funding goal. Any fees that would reduce the sum will be covered by Ephyra.
Why do you raise money if you already have cool prizes?
Earnings are an important measure of success in esports and we want our tournament to contribute to the overall earnings of our winners.
How long will you raise money?
We will run the campaign until we know when the tournament will start.
When does the tournament start?
There is not a set date for the tournament start yet.
Does the tournament take place even if you don't reach your funding goal?
Yes, definitively! Just with less money to win.
What do you do if you raise more money than 2000€?
Instead of raising the prize pool of this tournament, we want to have either more tournaments or pay for coaching sessions for women playing/casting Hearthstone.
Where do I get information about when the tournament will start and when registration is open?
Follow @BadassWomenHS on twitter or join our Discord.
Are transgender and non-binary people allowed to join the tournament?
Yes, for sure!
