After a long illness, my best friend Barb was diagnosed with bladder cancer and was scheduled for surgery to remove her bladder on April 17, 2019. During the surgery they discovered that the cancer had metastasized and and there was now a large, inoperable tumor near her kidneys. The prognosis went from 75% survival to a much lower percentage. It then further metastasized and is now in her stomach. Treatment is also being hindered by what they believe to be a small hole in her intestine, making chemotherapy impossible at this time.
For Barb and her partner Kathy, this health crisis has been an absolute shock. Those of us who know her are heartbroken, as we had felt so positive going into the surgery, but she must move forward into a different kind of care. Barb is now receiving hospice at home, which is where she is most comfortable.
A bit about my friend...Barb is one of the funniest, sweetest people I know. She never met a dog she didn't want to pet. Loves The Walking Dead, and lots of scary things--books and TV shows that I have to watch with my hands over my eyes. Doughnut Connoisseur. Genuinely hilarious, gregarious, spontaneous, and probably lots of other "ouses". We have been friends since college and every time I see her or talk to her, there is so much laughter, and fun, from the late nights in the dorm lounge pretending to study for finals, to laughing over breakfast out with our respective partners 30+ years later. Barb and Kathy have helped me on a lot of occasions. When I was a struggling single mom, they literally fed my kids and me from their own table, and gave us so much love and acceptance. They’re good-hearted people, together 25 years, and it is my pleasure to do this small thing to give back.
Right now, Barb and Kathy are just knocked out and emotionally exhausted. They are in mourning for the life she once had. She went from being an active person to being someone with an extremely serious prognosis in the course of a very short time. Total upheaval.
This is not a problem that can be solved with money, but as life goes on and the bills must be paid, we are asking for donations of any size to help offset expenses, as Barb is unable to work. Our goal here is to keep the lights on at Barb and Kat's place, and keep the dog fed, pay the mortgage, etc. Trying to maintain some normalcy in the chaotic situation. Your help is greatly appreciated and THANK YOU for your ongoing support!
