Broome Animal Sanctuary & Farm
Donation protected
We’re Greg and Tony, a couple together 20+ years who both have a lifelong passion to help animals. We’ve rescued several animals and have always said that we want to retire to a farm where we can focus on our rescue efforts full-time.
Well, we’ve purchased the property: 25 acres located in the Catskills in upstate New York. It includes a large barn and a few smaller structures that can be converted into climate-controlled shelters. Greg lives there full-time while Tony runs the family business, 9th & Coles Tavern in Jersey City.
Even though we both work full-time, we've already started to live our dream of running an animal sanctuary. Currently, the property is home to 26 chickens, one duck, several cats and dogs, Greg’s best friend, Wattles, a 400+ pound spotted pig of the Wattles breed and Wattles' half-brother Woodrow Wilson, a 50-pound pot-bellied pig.
Having fallen in love with our animals, we’ve both stopped eating meat and devote a tremendous amount of time to making their lives as comfortable as possible. For example, this winter, we built a heated chicken coop that houses not only our adult chickens, but a neighbor's rooster who got frostbite outside and was having a hard time walking. Our little chicks live inside our home until their coop is renovated and secured.
This past winter brought many rescue and shelter requests from people who know our work. Unfortunately, due to the lack of secured areas and funding, we could help only a few. For example, our duck and a chicken were pulled from the animal control shelter in Elizabeth/Newark, NJ.
As spring approaches and the ground begins to thaw at the farm, more requests to help other animals have started rolling in. We must act now.
This GoFundMe is intended to let our friends and supporters contribute to our rescue efforts and the sanctuary that we’re already started building. We want to give as many animals as possible the opportunity to live an amazing life. We’ve already spent a tremendous amount of money out of pocket; your funds would go to:
* Fencing to secure the perimeter, which is key to providing a secure environment for our animals. We’ll start with fencing two of our 25 acres.
* Stalls inside the barn. This is necessary to reduce stress on intakes as they become accustomed to their new environment.
* Running a water line out to the barn. Greg and Tony have already funded running a power line, and the water line is next up.
* Animal feed. Wattles alone goes through 50+ pounds per week, and we intend to bring on several more hungry animals.
* Trailer and ramps to transport animals to and from the veterinarian.
Any remaining funds go toward the ongoing power, water and feed expenditures, which are some of the many that Greg and Tony are currently funding out of pocket.
Thank you for your interest in helping us live our dream of taking care of these amazing creatures. We can’t do it without you!
