Relief for the McLeods

My daughter came home from school yesterday and shared some terrible news; Her beloved teacher, Mrs. McLeod, had lost her young son in an accident over the weekend. It hit me like a punch to the gut. I was in shock, and my heart ached for her, her other children, her husband, and all of the extended family and friends who are hurting. I will never understand why bad things happen to good people. But, as we know, tragedy does not discriminate.

Mrs. McLeod is a 'once-in-a-lifetime' teacher. The kind that stays with you throughout your school career, and beyond. We've all known one. She is my daughter's. She not only nourishes little minds, but little hearts and souls, too. Mrs. McLeod never misses an opportunity to smile, laugh or HUG. She's a 'bucket filler' (If you have a little one, I'm sure you're familiar with this sentiment!). She shares a magical connection with her students, which extends to their parents, and even their siblings. Your child is your most precious gift, and there is no better feeling than knowing that they are in good hands. We can't thank these special teachers enough for guiding and loving our kids, in our absence.

Upon learning about Mrs. McLeod's son, I wondered what in the world my family could do or say to let her know we care. Flowers and cards seem to fall short in a situation like this. Having lost my father just over a year ago, I realize the financial implications of a loved one passing away. I recall, very clearly, wondering what a person would do if there was no life insurance or estate to help offset these untimely expenses. It's not something a grieving family should have to fret over. Sadly, when a young person leaves this earth, there is generally no insurance, or the like, to help in this regard. As the family left behind attempt to pick-up the pieces, there is missed work, and lost income. There are lots of take-away meals. Sometimes counseling is required. Suddenly, their home becomes family headquarters, and the need for coffee and Kleenex is seemingly endless. In some cases, travel expenses are incurred. In any event, it's not only a devastating time, but a costly one.

As a gesture of support, love, and immense gratitude for all of the little lives that Mrs. McLeod has touched, especially my daughter's, I have created this page along with Jeremy McLeod. I would encourage anyone who has had the pleasure of knowing this family to consider a financial gift. If you're a friend, colleague, former student, or part of their church community, please show your support. In honour of YOUR 'once-in-a-lifetime' teacher, make a donation.

Let's come together and be exceptionally supportive of this exceptional teacher, and her entire family, as they navigate this difficult road.
