Send a Girl Engineer to St. Louis

You know what's awesome? When an ALL-GIRLS ROBOTICS TEAM wins a state championship! What's even better? When their invention helps the blind in profound ways.
St. Mary Academy - Bay View, in Riverside, RI, is an all-girls Pre-K through Grade 12 Catholic school. On January 14, 2017, their 10-member middle school robotics team, named S.M.A.R.T. 2.0, did something extraordinary - they won the FIRST® Lego® League Rhode Island State Championship, beating out 39 challenging teams!
THEIR WINNING DESIGN:
Their idea, which will be competing on the world stage, is a mobile app that enhances the way the blind and their seeing-eye dogs communicate. Bay View's S.M.A.R.T 2.0 team’s innovative solution created a dog harness system to make it easier for people who are blind to communicate with their seeing-eye dogs. As an address is spoken into a person’s phone, an app will transmit the directions to the dog’s vest. The dog would be trained to turn left or right when it felt a vibration on the left or right vest shoulder, making it easier to navigate to a destination. This feat of engineering will significantly enhance the quality of life of the blind, enabling them to more easily and safely travel on foot to the destination of their choice. The team was also challenged to build and program a Lego® Mindstorms® robot to execute commands on a game table, another important segment of the competition.
The girls now head to the 4-day FIRST® Lego® League world championships in St. Louis, MO and they need your help to get there! Your tax-deductible donation will be used to fund expenses for the team, enabling them to compete in the world championship taking place April 26-29. Over 30 countries and 108 teams will be represented.
We need to get our 10 competitors to St. Louis and show the world what these girl engineers can do for the blind!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF THIS INCREDIBLE OPPORTUNITY.
St. Mary Academy - Bay View is a 501(c)3 organization and your donation is tax deductible to full extent allowed by law.
