Beach clean-up on Isle of Scarp
Donation protected
We are heading to the isle of Scarp at the end of this month to clean up its large beach which is covered in a massive amount of plastic debris.
When visiting last summer, we found things like boots, ropes, fishing equipment, shoes, and other plastics washed up in one location over years and years. The beach cleanup will restore the beach to a condition free of plastic and other waste materials, allowing an island which is now uninhabited by people to be free of our garbage as well. When we first visited Mol Mor, as the beach is named, the most striking feature was the amount of plastic buoys of all shapes, colors, and sizes. The buoys will be used as material for an upcoming art installation to be shown in Edinburgh this September.
The aim of this campaign is to raise most of the funds necessary for travel to and from the island, covering the cost of fuel (£100), ferry (£75 for car & £180-£200 for haulage lorry), food & lodging for one week (approximately £300-£400), and to organize the haulage of plastic objects and waste materials from Scarp back to Glasgow (around £100-£200). This gives us a target amount of £800. In Glasgow, the collection of buoys from the beach will go on to be used as art objects in an immersive installation by Mara Marxt Lewis and Tyler Lewis. The other collected waste will be either recycled or passed-on to companies for re-use.
We need to raise this money before our travels begin on June 30th, to guarantee that we have a haulage truck scheduled to bring the cargo back to Glasgow from the Hebrides. Later in August, some photo documentation and information about the cleanup will be shown in a small installation at Locavore Grocery, in Govanhill, Glasgow. https://glasgowlocavore.org/ Locavore is a social enterprise affecting change in the local economy and environment, aiming to reduce packaging and the use of plastics through their zero-waste program.
This support will enable us to complete our beach clean-up mission and extend the reach of our artwork beyond the studio and gallery space. We know this project can make a difference and we can do it with your help!
We truly appreciate the support - let's make this a reality and restore the beach on Scarp!
