WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO . . .
Small Island States like St. Vincent & the Grenadines (SVG) have a huge need for Human Development, Nation Building, and Social Integration. The Bequia United Swim Club (BUSC), formed in 2015, is making a significant contribution by giving our youth a Sense of Purpose through the introduction and development of several Swim Programs, ranging from Learn-to-Swim to International Competition. Our Bequia Barracudas comptetition team continues to bring home medals from different International Events.
Participation at International Events develops a wider Frame of Reference, and exposes our Young People to adventures, futures and relationships that lie beyond our shores.
These Young People are our Future.
HOW WE DO WHAT WE DO . . .
We are led by volunteer U.S.A. Swim Coach, Kara Randall, who is supported by coaches, other volunteers and an administrative team. Kara has a life long association with Bequia and comes to us from her Professional Practice in Wisconsin. Her expertise and qualifications as a Holistic Health Practitioner include Exercise Physiology/Personal Training, Nutrition, Massage Therapy and Human Development.
Kara has made significant personal Financial Contributions, funding her own travel expenses as well as providing equipment, team travel support, accommodation, nutrition, administration and more.
Bequia United Swim Club (BUSC) was formed in 2015 out of a vision of Louise Mitchell-Joseph's desire to have a swim team, and eventually a swimming pool, on the beautiful Caribbean island of Bequia, her childhood home. Her guidance, influence and encouragement helps us navigate the various challenges we constantly face. Louise keeps us focused.
We specialize in Open Water Swimming but also compete in pool competitions. As there is no swimming pool in Bequia; a pool is one of our targets for funding.
SOME BACKGROUND INFORMATION . . .
Bequia is the largest of the 32 "Grenadines;" a combination of inhabited and uninhabited islands that make up the country St. Vincent & the Grenadines. In comparison to St. Vincent (the mainland) with a population of approximately 110,000 people, Bequia is about 8 square miles, populated by approximately 5,000 people.
Surrounded by the blue waters of the Caribbean, most of the children of Bequia grow up in the sea. They are strong swimmers and highly physically fit - without any formal training in swimming or the proper way to perform competitive swim strokes. A swim coach's dream... So beginning November 2014, the first Bequia Swim Clinic was offered. Sixty-Five young people and teens turned out! Since then, there has been a committed crew enthusiastically training and learning open-water freestyle techniques, as well as competitive pool techniques.
The Bequia United Swim Club now makes a positive contribution to swimming in St. Vincent & the Grenadines. Above all, there is now an environment where the young people of Bequia can develop themselves physically, and more importantly, academically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually by the discipline it takes to be a swimmer in the unique, caring, mentoring environment provided by the coaches. Our overall mission and intention is that every swimmer knows that “THEY MATTER.”
HOW YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE . . .
BUSC has been blessed by generous donors who have helped us get started. We are fully established swim club and continue to have opportunities to send a few of our best swimmers to international events.
We are committed to raising $60,000 USD for the continued support of our Youth Development Mission. Funding is needed to cover Equipment, Travel and Coaching expenses and the eventual construction of our own Competition Pool in Bequia.
Your contribution will help ensure that the vision continues ….
