Berkeley or Bust! Capstone Project

The founding class of Cohen College Prep's Academy of Career and Community Education needs your help to make our 2015-16 Capstone Project a reality.
ACCE is a transitional program for students receiving special education services, with the goal of increasing adult independence and employability. This year, our midterm Life Skills project will be a student-led, student-planned trip to Berkeley, California to view the Patient No More exhibit at San Francisco State University's Ed Roberts campus.
Patient No More explores the history of the Section 504 Sit-In that paved the way for the Americans With Disabilities Act. This is an important milestone in our nation's history, and viewing the exhibit will be particularly meaningful for our ACCE students as they drawn connections between the development of the ADA and their personal lives, both at Cohen and beyond.
Many of our ACCE students have never traveled beyond our border states, and none have traveled independently. Often, Cohen College Prep students participate in end-of-year trips to tour universities in other states and develop a vision for their lives after graduation. For ACCE students, who are not currently considering 4-year out-of-state colleges as part of their transition plans, the Capstone Project will provide a similar experience that is relevant and inspiring.
The Capstone Project will be an opportunity for students to utilize the skills they have been taught in our Life, Social, and Career Skills classes in a context that is motivating, rewarding, and confidence-building. Students will plan and execute all the logistics for the trip as part of our grading rubric, including:
- budgeting their per diem expenses for meals
- planning and routing our use of public transportation
- booking our lodging and plane fare online
- creating a daily time-blocked schedule of activities
- demonstrating strong social skills with people we encounter, such as self-advocacy, active listening, and appropriate voice and body language.
- creating a Powerpoint presentation of our trip to share with staff and students
The ACCE Capstone Project is groundbreaking in the New Orleans special education landscape - we are dreaming big and pushing the boundaries of what is thought to be possible. To keep the dream alive, we need YOUR help! We are seeking to raise $4,000 to cover the costs of our trip, including airfare, lodging, food, and transportation. Each contribution to our project is an investment in the future of innovative, holistic, and person-centered special education in New Orleans, and who doesn't want to be a part of something that exciting?
