Good day everyone, my name is Bianca Jorda
n. I am a Junior at Clemson University. I am taking a course called “People, Place, Sustainability”. The goal of the course is to continue implementation of Landscapes for Learning: Dominica. Landscapes for Learning helps with encouraging youth leadership and empowerment, promoting environmental responsibility and stewardship, formal and nonformal environmental education, and the strengthening of schools- communities’ linkages.
I will be traveling to The Commonwealth of Dominica, which is a mountainous island located in the West Indies between the islands of Guadalupe and Martinique. The population of the island is roughly about 73,000 people. The official languageis English. Overall, the poverty rate is about 28%. Me and others in the course are collaborating with the school children, principals, teachers, parents, and community volunteers, to help with some planting and painting at Grand Fond Primary and Morne Jaune Primary Schools. These are rural villages that are somewhat difficult to get to. The project has facilitated the creation food gardens, a rain garden, some outdoor learning areas and a farmer’s market stand at the edge of one of schoolyards. Outdoor learning areas include the “Pillars of Character” project and murals depicting the materials that the children are learning in the classroom. Tires have been retrieved from the roadsides and streams and put to practical use on school grounds. Sport as a part of sustainability is important.
This will be the first time I would have the opportunity to be able to help with something so gracious. By doing this not only will I be helping others by bringing assistance to their communities, but I will also be learning new things as we go along. I will participate in cultural activities and get a first-hand appreciation for global social, environmental, educational, cultural
and other factors that have direct and indirect bearing on sustainability. I also will grapple with real problems that require practical application of my skills, insights, and empathy for others. Engaging in this project offers me a real opportunity to grow intellectually and otherwise. However, traveling isn’t free, nothing in this world is free. So please find it in your hearts to help me make this journey in being able to go to Dominica to help those over there. I have been blessed to have live that life I have, please help me to be able to others. The money would go to my air fare and with my lodging.
Please help us help these schools and improve the educational and play experiences for the children attending these schools. Please help me get there to help!
Thank you. Trust me, every dollar helps!
