Bici Bushwick
What is the project?
BiCi Immersion Camp: It is a 3-day bike Immersion (June 7, 9 & 10) for girls ages 10 to 14, local to Bushwick!
Mission:
To spark a lifelong love of biking by learning how to ride, fixing a flat, adventuring through the neighborhood. In this bike immersion, we want to begin to empower young girls to become self-sufficient and self-determined by encouraging body positivity, outdoor activities and learning the basic bike mechanics. Finally, our dream is for each girl to leave this immersion with a bike and having the confidence and knowledge of why it is so important for girls/femmes to take up space on the streets!
We're partnering with Mayday Space! BiCi Immersion Camp @ Mayday
We're excited to bring this project to Mayday because we know the importance of creating a program in a sustainable space so that we can maximize our impact. Mayday is both a neighborhood resource and a citywide destination for engaging programming, a home for radical thought and debate, and a welcoming gathering place for people and movements to work, learn, celebrate and build together.
BiCi Bushwick Team!
Cata is a passionate biker who has been teaching yoga at Mayday and supporting Mayday events for the past two years as a participant and volunteer. Cata is excited to expand their role as a volunteer at Mayday with this program.
Nancy, who is currently a staff member is excited to work on this in a volunteer capacity but more personally as a long-term Bushwick Native; she is excited to bring more long-term Bushwick families to Mayday by creating a program that will inspire growth and self-determination within young girls and their families.
Tasnima is a graphic designer (and the creator our beautiful flyer) is from Queens but now lives in Brooklyn. Cata and Tasnima started biking together in 2014 on Tasnima's first interboro bike ride!
Marisol is a current CUNY student and intermediate biker. She is excited to increase her confidence on a bike along with the campers.
Dorothy is a Bushwick native who loves to bike and is excited to show the girls around her neighborhood.
Because of our connections to Mayday and the neighborhood we feel it's the perfect place to uplift girls and their bikes.

Why this project?
Addressing the gender inequity in biking:
~ "In the U.S., 24% of all bicycle trips are made by women and 76% are made by men." --U.S. Department of Transportation, 2010 - 2009 National Household Travel Survey
~ "On average, boys cycle nearly 6 times as much as girls (138 miles/year versus 24 miles/year.)" --National Children's Bureau - in "What's stopping teenage girls from riding bikes? S. Phillips, Guardian.co.uk Bike Blog, November 17, 2009, Guardian.co.uk Bike Blog, November 17, 2009
To catapult girls into a lifelong love of biking by increasing confidence, access, and community support:
~ "People who are confident biking as adults are more likely to have biked frequently when they were young than those people who aren't biking as adults." --Dill, J., and McNeil, N., 2012 - Four Types of Cyclists? Testing a Typology to Better Understand Bicycling Behavior and Potential (Working paper)
~ "People are more likely to bike for transportation if they have social support from family and friends." --De Bourdeaudhuij, I., et al., 2005 -Environmental and psychosocial correlates of physical activity in Portuguese and Belgian adults, Public Health Nutrition, 8, 886?895
